IRVING, Texas — A total of three University of Texas players earned spots on the 2018-19 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Men's Basketball Award teams, the league office announced Sunday. Forward Jaxson Hayes was named the league's Freshman of the Year, becoming the sixth UT player to earn the accolade (joining T.J. Ford in 2001-02, Daniel Gibson in 2004-05, Kevin Durant in 2006-07, Tristan Thompson in 2010-11 and Myles Turner in 2014-15).
Hayes also claimed spots on the All-Big 12 Second Team, the six-person Big 12 All-Defensive Team, the five-person Big 12 All-Newcomer Team and the five-person Big 12 All-Freshman Team. Sophomore guard Matt Coleman III and senior guard Kerwin Roach II were two of 16 individuals to earn a place on the All-Big 12 Honorable Mention Team.
Hayes leads the team and ranks third in the Big 12 in blocked shots (70, 2.3 bpg) and ranks second on the squad in scoring (10.3 ppg) and rebounding (5.1 rpg). He has reached double figures in scoring in 17 games this year. Hayes has converted 73.2-percent (123-168) from the floor this year and is on pace to break the UT single-season record for highest field goal percentage (65.4-percent, Dexter Pittman in 2009-10).
Coleman III leads the team and is fifth in the Big 12 in assists (3.7 apg). He also is tops on the team in minutes (31.4 mpg) and free throw percentage (.778) and ranks third in scoring (10.2 ppg) and tied for fourth in steals (25). Roach II leads the team in scoring (15.0 ppg) and ranks second in assists (3.1 apg), steals (31) and minutes (31.2 mpg) and third in rebounding (4.5 rpg) this season. He has reached double figures in scoring in 21 of his 24 contests played.
The official All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league's head coaches. The coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.
