Greetings Longhorn Nation,
The pride and winning tradition of the Texas Longhorns will not be entrusted to the weak nor the timid. No truer words represented the drive, determination, passion and grit of our Longhorns last week. I've never been prouder of how a team rallied during challenging times to accomplish great things more than Men's Tennis and Coach Berque. What a run it was and the Longhorns are 2019 National Champions! It was such a joy to watch it all culminate with hoisting the title trophy Sunday in Orlando. That same day, Coach White and our Softball squad rallied from a difficult start in the NCAA tourney to charge ahead with an NCAA Regional win and advance to this week's Super Regional against Alabama in Tuscaloosa. And Rowing brought home its fifth-straight Big 12 Championship to light the UT Tower burnt orange one more time this year. What a weekend and what a tremendous group of coaches and student-athletes we have! And there's so much more to come!
Now it's graduation week on the Forty Acres. This is a time that is so special for our student-athletes, their families, and all of us as we celebrate their great accomplishment! When they walk across that stage and receive their diplomas, it will be the culmination of a lot of hard work, sacrifice, determination and commitment to reach the ultimate goal of every student-athlete. We are so proud of each and every one of them and look forward to our annual graduation celebration and the presentation of the student-athlete commencement stoles this Thursday. What starts here, changes the world!
Championship season continues this week as our Big 12 and NCAA Regional Champion Women's Golf team is hitting them straight at the NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Coach Murphy's squad finished stroke play Tuesday as the top seed and joins eight other teams in match play as they "Take Dead Aim" on a championship. Men's Golf heats up at the NCAA Championship later this week, too. On the heels of a 20-stroke victory and Steven Chervony and Cole Hammer sharing medalist honors at the NCAA Austin Regional, Coach Fields and our Men's Golf team head to Fayetteville to begin stroke play Friday. Also in NCAA postseason action is Coach Flo and our Outdoor Track and Field team who are in Sacramento for the NCAA West Prelims Thursday-Saturday. What an awesome opportunity for our student-athletes to seek to qualify for the NCAA Championships and the team competition to be held right here in Austin in a few weeks. We can't wait to host the nation's best in track and field!
Speaking of championship-level efforts, I want to give a shout out to one of our really talented groups in Texas Athletics: our social media team. What an amazing job they do, and their impact on our student-athletes, coaches, programs and connection with our fans through all of the various platforms and channels has had an enoroumous impact. One recent example that was reported showed our @TexasLonghorns Instagram account increasing by 86,000 followers, a 91% growth, in the past year. Both of those numbers are by far largest in the nation during that time. Kudos to everyone involved, thank you for your tireless and extremely creative inspiration, and we're lucky to have you on our team!
What a great time to be a Longhorn. Nine Big 12 Championships, a New Year's Six bowl victory and top 10 finish for Football, and now the 55th National Championship in school history. We are focused on putting "T" back in Texas and so fortunate to have Longhorn Nation supporting us as we continue to build on the legacy of the pride and winning tradition of the Texas Longhorns. We're just getting started and excited to finish the year out strong!
