Greetings Longhorn Nation,
This week began with gratitude, respect and appreciation as we honored those who have served our great nation on Memorial Day. It is a day to reflect, remember and pay tribute to the brave men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms. It's also a time to share and remember what makes our country great and the values these national heroes defended and upheld. We are so grateful.
Another busy week in Texas Athletics began Monday evening as we honored our Men's Tennis team by lighting the tower Burnt Orange to celebrate the National Championship. What a beautiful site it was seeing that beaming orange beacon of success emblazoned with the number one on all four sides. It's an awesome tradition and fantastic way to recognize what our team, and of course Bruce Berque, who we recently named our head coach, accomplished this season. We're thrilled with how he led our program as an interim head coach and are so excited to have him leading us into the future.
More championships are on the line this week on the heels of our Women's Golf team advancing to the NCAA Championship Match Play quarterfinals last week, our Men's team is making a deep run in their NCAA Championship this week. Coach Fields and the squad advanced to Match Play on Monday for the third time in four years and are the only program in the country to qualify for Match Play in six of the last eight years. Texas Golf continues to be among the nation's elite as our Longhorns are one of only three schools nationally (Standford, Wake Forest) where both the men's and women's teams advanced to Match Play and the final eight of the NCAA Championship. Also in NCAA Championship competition this week is Coach O'Neill and our fourth-ranked Rowing team. In their last outing, they won a Big 12 Championship, and now they're headed to Indianapolis to compete on the national stage. You can follow those events and cheer on your Longhorns on all of our social media platforms and TexasSports.com.
How about Coach Floréal and our Texas Track & Field team's efforts at the NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento last week? Four school records, nine top-three finishers and 20 entries qualified for the NCAA Championship, which we will be hosting right here at Mike A. Myers Stadium (June 5-8). Hope everyone will come out and cheer on our Horns as the best in the nation in track & field compete in Austin.
What a joy it was watching our Softball squad compete in a Super Regional at Alabama. It didn't end the way we wanted, but what a first year for Coach White. Forty-six wins, a Top-10 finish and one win short of the Women's College World Series. It's a great start to a bright future and and made Longhorn Nation Proud. And thank you to everyone for your support and well wishes for Miranda Elish, she is in good spirits, doing well and in great hands back here in Austin. She epitomizes Texas Fight!
In closing, last week was an opportunity to celebrate our graduates, and what an annual treat that is. We also continued to enjoy an exciting championship season as our Longhorns came away with another Big 12 Championship, two more Top 10 finishes and of course a Men's Tennis National Championship. It's such a joy to share this wonderful time with our student-athletes, their families, our coaches and their programs. Thank you, too, for all of your support and commitment to helping us put the "T" back in Texas.
