Greetings Longhorn Nation,
What a thrill it was hosting the nation's finest in track and field last week with the NCAA Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium. We see it every year at the Texas Relays, but it was another great reminder of how awesome our facilities are as the energy in the stadium, and the blazing times, spectacular leaps and tremendous throws were on full display for four amazing days. We know the state of Texas loves its track and field, and thank you for coming out to support this wonderful event. We're so excited to be hosting it again next year!
There's nothing like watching our Longhorns compete and showing that Texas pride! Both our Men's and Women's Track & Field teams finished in the Top 10, and 11 Longhorns earned All-American honors. It was a solid start for Coach Floréal as he builds our program into one of the nation's elite. How about Ashtin Zamzow's gritty performance in winning the heptathlon and setting the school record to boot?! Watching her cross the line in the 800 meters to cap a grueling seven-event victory was a truly special moment. And our guy Tripp Piperi winning the national title in the shot, you can't help but love that young man's energy and enthusiasm, and he's just a sophomore so we get to watch him for years to come. Teahna Daniels was a warrior, finishing fourth in the 100, fifth in the 200 and helped our 4x100 relay earn All-America honors. The youngsters were burning up the track, too, as sophomore Micaiah Harris (200m) and freshman Jonathan Jones (200m) keep lowering long-standing records in their events that they broke this year. The future is extremely bright for Texas Track & Field and kudos to Coach Flo and his staff on a great start.
The NCAA Track & Field Championships closed out a terrific Texas Athletics season. Four of our Longhorn teams finished in the NCAA Top Two (most since 1993-94), seven were in the Top Five (most since 2008-09), and 11 registered Top 10 finishes. We also recorded a league-best nine Big 12 Championships. Thank you to our truly gifted and talented student-athletes and coaches for providing us such magnificent memories in 2018-19. Longhorn Nation, we're just getting started!
I'd like to give a huge shout out to our staff that poured their energy into working the NCAA Track & Field Championships last week, led by the tireless James Barr. We definitely put our best foot forward and hosted an incredible event. I'm so grateful for everyone, from the staffers managing the preparation and running of the event to the many on our athletics team that volunteered their time in support. We rolled out the Burnt Orange carpet and it warmed my heart seeing all the smiles on participants' and fans' faces at Mike A. Myers Stadium, signifying a job well done! Ya'll set the bar for others to follow!
With our seasons complete, we will take a break from the Forty Acres insider for a few weeks, but the fall seasons will be here before we know it. We're deep into planning to make everything bigger, better and even more exciting at all of our events in 2019-20 and look forward to seeing you at all of our venues. Football season ticket sales have surpassed 60,000 and are growing. DKR is going to be the place to be in the fall, and Longhorn Fans, thank you for your continued support in building an awesome home-field advantage. Additionally, we've set up a webcam for all our fans to watch as our South Endzone project is built.
Thank you for all of the passion, pride and support you've provided in helping to make this year so special. With your help, we're putting the "T" back in Texas!
Here's to hoping you have a summer filled with family, friends, fun and festivities.
