DES MOINES, Iowa – Former University of Texas sprinter Teahna Daniels highlighted day one of the 2019 Toyota United States Track & Field (USATF) Outdoor Championships for the Longhorns, as she ran an 11.30 in the first round of the women's 100-meter dash to win her heat and secure her spot in Friday's semifinal round.
Daniels, an Orlando, Fla. native, has been successful in a number of international races after wrapping up her collegiate career last month. So far this summer, she claimed gold in the U23 100-meter dash with an 11.03 mark at the NACAC Championships in Queretaro, Mexico. Daniels followed up her podium-topping performance by earning a fourth-place finish in the women's 200 meters (22.59) at the IAAF Diamond League event in Monaco on July 11. She also posted a third-place finish at the 2019 Prefontaine Classic with an 11.13 mark in the women's 100-meter final on June 30.
Daniels was a 10-time All-American while competing for The University of Texas, making her one of 20 women in program history to earn double-digit All-America honors. She joined that list of Longhorn greats by earning of trio of first-team All-America nods (100m, 200m, 4x100m) at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships, which were held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin last month.
Along with Daniels, two other recent Texas Exes competed at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships on Thursday.
Gabby Crank, a Dallas, Texas native, was first to go, as she ran a 2:06.37 in the first round of the women's 800 meters. Crank finished sixth in her heat and did not qualify for Friday's semifinal round.
Alex Rogers, a New Braunfels, Texas native, ran the first round of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:00.47. His time left him on the outside of the qualifying group for Saturday's final.
Action in Des Moines will continue through the weekend, and a number of Longhorns are slated to compete. The list of UT stars in action on Friday includes Anna McDonald (3,000m steeplechase – first round), Tripp Piperi (shot put) and Teahna Daniels (100m – semifinals & finals). Friday's coverage will also feature Longhorn greats Courtney Okolo (400m) and Ryan Crouser (shot put).
