Austin, Texas – An All-American who helped Ohio State to two ITA National Indoor Championships and an NCAA finals appearance as a player, Martin Joyce has been named Volunteer Assistant Men's Tennis Coach at Texas, Head Coach Bruce Berque announced Monday. Joyce has also been accepted to UT's McCombs School of Business where he will work toward a master's degree in professional accounting.
"We are very excited that Martin will be joining our coaching staff," Berque said. "We have great respect for him as a player, and for the Ohio State program that he was an integral part of for the last four years. There's no doubt that Martin will make an important contribution to our young team in the upcoming season."
"I'm honored and extremely fortunate to be joining the coaching staff at Texas, one of the great programs in college tennis and the defending National Champions," Joyce said. "I've known Coach Berque for a long time. He's one of the top coaches in the game, and it's exciting that I'll get the chance to learn from him. I'm so thankful to him and Coach (Brandon) Wagner for believing that I can add to their team, and I can't wait to get started. At the same time, I'll also be studying at the top accounting program in the country, and I couldn't be more grateful for this opportunity to be coming to The University of Texas."
Joyce comes to the 40 Acres after spending the last four years as a member of the Buckeyes' men's tennis team. He helped lead OSU to a top-four finish in the ITA rankings in each of those seasons, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the 2018 NCAA Championships when he was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Joyce also was part of two ITA National Indoor Championship teams at Ohio State in 2016 and 2019, the first of which he clinched as a true freshman, and he was named to the All-Tournament Team both years.
In individual play, Joyce finished ranked in the Top 50 of the ITA doubles rankings in each of his four years. Peaked by a No. 11 ranking with partner Mikael Torpegaard in 2018, the duo reached the final of the NCAA Doubles Championships that year, leading to All-America honors. Joyce was also chosen second-team All-Big 10 that season.
As a senior in 2019, he finished in the top 25 with two separate partners, ranking No. 18 with JJ Wolf and No. 23 with Hunter Tubert. Meanwhile, he and Hugo Di Feo were No. 40 in 2017, and he paired with Ralf Steinbach to rank No. 50 as a freshman in 2016.
A three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten selection (2017-19), Joyce earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in finance with a minor in economics from Ohio State in May 2019. He was also a four-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and member of the Fisher College of Business Dean's List.
Since being graduated from Ohio State, Joyce has served as a Junior Development Teaching Pro in his hometown of Hinsdale, Ill., where he has also spent the past five summers as a tennis pro. Additionally, he volunteered his time at Buddy Up Tennis in Columbus, Ohio, teaching tennis and fitness to individuals with Down Syndrome.
