Men’s Swimming and Diving White Team surges to lead in intrasquad meet

Longhorns set or tie four meet records in first day of Orange-White meet.
AUSTIN, Texas — The White Team surged to an 87-44 lead after Thursday's opening day of The University of Texas Men's Swimming and Diving Orange-White meet at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The meet marks the first official competition of the 2020-21 season.
The Longhorns set or tied four meet records in four of the six individual events contested on Thursday. A pair of freshmen, David Johnston in the 500-yard freestyle (4:16.45) and Carson Foster in the 200-yard individual medley (1:43.73), set meet records in their respective collegiate debuts. Sophomore Caspar Corbeau topped the meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke (51.99), while junior Daniel Krueger tied the meet record in the 50-yard freestyle (19.32).
Meet Highlights
- Senior Alvin Jiang kicked off the meet with a win in the 100-yard backstroke (45.70), while senior Austin Katz (46.80) took second.
- Sophomore Caspar Corbeau won the 100-yard breaststroke (51.99), while freshman Carson Foster (53.55) placed second. Corbeau's time set an Orange-White meet record in the event, besting the previous mark set by Charlie Scheinfeld (52.86).
- Senior Sam Pomajevich claimed the 200-yard butterfly (1:42.78), and sophomore Cole Crane (1:45.04) finished runner-up.
- Junior Daniel Krueger won the 50-yard freestyle (19.32), edging out Alvin Jiang (19.64). Krueger's time tied the Orange-White meet record in the event, previously set by himself and Joseph Schooling.
- Freshman David Johnston made an immediate impact in his collegiate debut with a win in the 500-yard freestyle (4:16.45), Johnston's time set an Orange-White meet record, topping the previous mark set by Clark Smith (4:18.98). In fact, the top three finishers in the event – junior Drew Kibler in second (4:16.58) and junior Alex Zettle in third (4:17.84) – eclipsed the previous meet record.
- Freshman Carson Foster claimed the 200-yard individual medley (1:43.73), beating out his older brother, sophomore Jake Foster (1:44.50). Carson Foster's time set an Orange-White meet record, topping the previous mark set by John Shebat (1:44.52).
- The White team's quartet of Austin Katz, Caspar Corbeau, Alvin Jiang and Daniel Krueger capped off the first day's action with a win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:25.25).
The Orange-White meet concludes on Friday, Oct. 2. Action will begin at 3:30 p.m. CT and include both swimming and diving events. Due to health and safety protocols, the meet is closed to the public.
