UT freshman posts five wins against WTA-ranked opponents en route to her third career ITF singles championship.
MONASTIR, Tunisia — University of Texas freshman Lulu Sun claimed the singles title at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) pro circuit 15K tournament on Sunday at the Magic Life Skanes Family Resort. This marked Sun's third career ITF singles title, as she previously earned 15K titles at Port Pirie, Australia (Feb. 17, 2019) and Perth, Australia (Feb. 24, 2019).
In Sunday's championship match, Sun recorded a 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 victory against WTA-ranked No. 433 Carole Monnet (France). Sun swept the opening set in just 28 minutes. Tied at 2-2 in the second set, Monnet won four straight games to even the match at one set apiece. Tied at 1-1 in the decisive third set, Sun captured four consecutive games to build a 5-1 cushion. Monnet held serve to close within 5-2, but Sun responded by holding serve in the following game to close out the match.
Sun, who had to advance through two rounds of qualifying before the tournament's 32-player main draw began, won a total of seven matches in an eight-day span (Dec. 6-13) in Monastir. She posted straight-set victories in each of her first six matches prior to the three-set win in Sunday's final. All five of her main draw opponents were ranked among the top 851 players in the current WTA rankings, including three in the top 500.
Sun's performance in Monastir continued her successful play over the last six weeks. She previously advanced to the singles final at the ITF 15K event in Sharm-El Sheikh, Egypt on Nov. 16-22. Sun also paired with partner Valentina Ryser (Switzerland) and claimed runner-up finishes in doubles on back-to-back weeks (Nov. 2-8 and Nov. 9-15) at ITF 15K tournaments in Sharm-El Sheikh.
