No. 19 Women’s Basketball rolls past Lamar, 77-49
12.29.2020 | Women's Basketball
Charli Collier (28 pts./13 rebs.) & DeYona Gaston (18 pts./10 rebs.) each registered double-doubles
AUSTIN, Texas – In a match-up that saw the Longhorns limited to a pre-game roster of just eight available players because of various maladies, No. 19 Texas (7-1) shot 52.6% from the floor and got double-doubles from junior forward/center Charli Collier and freshman forward DeYona Gaston in powering past Lamar (1-7), 77-49.
Collier led the offensive charge with her fifth double-double of the season and 21st of her illustrious career by putting up a team-high 28 points (19 in the first half) and 13 rebounds. Gaston managed her first career double-double with 18 points and 10 boards, while junior guard Joanne Allen-Taylor stretched her career-long double-figure scoring streak to seven straight games with 12 points against the Cardinals. Freshman guard Ashley Chevalier added eight points and joined redshirt sophomore guard Karisma Ortiz in dishing four assists each.
One of the top turnover-producing defenses in the nation, the Longhorns grabbed 23 Lamar miscues and converted those into 32 points.
Texas got off to a quick start against Lamar, jumping to a 6-0 lead and then a 12-3 advantage on the strength of eight of Collier's 10 first-quarter tallies.
An Allen-Taylor jumper with 17 seconds left in the opening quarter stretched the UT advantage to 11 before the Longhorns settled for a 20-11 lead after one.
Lamar came out on the front foot to start the second 10-minute session as five straight Sabria Dean points cut the Cardinal deficit to just six at 24-18 with 7:18 to play in the half.
That was as close as Lamar would get the rest of the way as a Collier "and-one" play ignited what turned into a 16-7 Texas spurt to close the half.
Gaston really highlighted the stretch for the Longhorns by grabbing a rebound and driving it coast-to-coast for a lay-up at 6:01. She later followed that up with a steal and a fast break bucket to boost the lead to as much as 17 at 40-23 with 1:10 to go in the half.
Out of the locker room, Lamar got a Malay McQueen two with 6:05 remaining in the third that cut the Cardinal deficit to 15 points at 46-31.
That was the last point Texas' defense allowed in the third quarter as the Longhorns erupted on a 16-0 spurt to end the stanza with a commanding 62-31 advantage. Over that decisive stretch, Gaston had six points, Collier five, senior guard Kyra Lambert three and Chevalier two.
From there, the Burnt Orange & White expanded their lead to as many as 34 points on a Collier put-back with 7:23 to go before settling for the eventual 28-point victory.
