The 12 made three-pointers tied for the third-most in a single game in Texas program history
AUSTIN, Texas – On Wednesday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center, No. 23 Texas (4-1) knocked down a season-high 12 three-pointers and turned the ball over just six times in knocking off Idaho (2-1), 73-48.
As a team, the Longhorns tied for their third-most made three-pointers in a single game (12), attempted their most three-pointers in a single game (37) and tied for their third-fewest turnovers in a single game (six) in program history.
Junior forward/center Charli Collier managed her 20th career double-double and ninth career 20-point effort by scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 boards.
Redshirt sophomore guard Karisma Ortiz contributed career-highs in points (15), field goals made (six), three-pointers (tied with three) and steals (four) while also adding four assists. Junior guard Joanne Allen-Taylor continued her strong start to 2020-21 by reaching double figures for the fourth straight game and equaling her career scoring mark with 15 points. The Houston, Texas, native also hit three three-pointers, grabbed three rebounds and dished three assists. Senior guard Kyra Lambert tied for the team high with a trio of threes in scoring nine points while grabbing five boards and dishing five assists. Freshman guard Shay Holle was busy off the bench posting a career-high 10 rebounds and four assists over 23 minutes.
Both teams got off to a cold shooting start from the field as the two squads combined for a 5-5 tie at the first media timeout.
That's when Texas' offense began to catch fire as an Ortiz bucket ignited a run that helped the Longhorns to a 19-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Over that stretch, Collier scored seven points, sophomore guard Celeste Taylor drilled a three and Allen-Taylor added a fast-break lay-in.
What eventually grew into a 23-2 spurt spanning the opening two stanzas continued as the Longhorns opened the second quarter with three consecutive threes (two from Allen-Taylor, one from Ortiz) to boost their advantage to 28-7.
Texas' long distance barrage continued almost unabated as Allen-Taylor and Ortiz hit again from three to make it 38-12 with 5:14 to go in the half.
From there, a Collier and-one play, a DeYona Gaston driving lay-up and another Ortiz triple sent the teams to the break with Texas holding its largest halftime lead of the season at 46-14.
After Lambert opened the second half with a triple, UT's advantage eventually expanded to as many as 36 points, on an Allen-Taylor bucket with 6:23 to go in the third, before the Vandals began chipping away at their deficit.
Spanning the third and fourth frames, a 10-1 Idaho run cut Texas' lead to 26 points at 63-37. Collier responded for the Horns, however, as the Mont Belvieu native hit consecutive baskets to stretch the advantage back to 30.
The Vandals clawed within 24 points with 2:05 left, but could get no closer as the Longhorns eventually prevailed, 73-48.
