The junior sprinter broke his own school record with a world-leading 20.49 in the 200m last weekend.
IRVING, Texas – Texas Track and Field sprinter Micaiah Harris was named the Big 12 Men's Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. It is the first time that Harris, a junior, has earned the honor in his career.
This past weekend, Harris broke his own school record in the 200-meter dash by running a 20.49 at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. His time is the No. 1 mark in the NCAA, and the world, so far this season. Harris is the only athlete in the world to run the 200-meter dash in under 20.70 during the current indoor campaign, and he has done so twice. He previously ran a 20.54 – his first school-record mark at 200 meters this year – at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Jan. 24.
Harris, a Virginia Beach, Va. native, also ran the third leg in the Longhorns' winning 4x400-meter relay team at the Razorback Invitational over the weekend, helping UT finish in 3:07.85 – the No. 8 time in the NCAA this season. The 4x400-meter relay win secured the team title for the Longhorns, who finished with 79 points as a team in Fayetteville.
