AUSTIN, Texas — Greg Brown III has signed to play basketball next season at The University of Texas, head coach Shaka Smart announced Friday. Brown will join the Longhorns for the upcoming 2020-21 season.
"We're very excited about Greg joining our program," Smart said. "We've truly enjoyed building relationships with him and his family over the past four years. His growth as a person and player has been fun to watch. Now as a Longhorn, that growth will continue. We're looking forward to Greg's positive impact on his new teammates and team. In addition, we're excited about helping Greg become his very best at Texas. The future is bright!"
Brown (6-9, 195), a forward from Vandegrift High School (Austin, Texas) who played under coach Cliff Ellis, is ranked as the No. 8 prospect in the nation by Rivals, No. 9 by 247Sports composite and No. 9 by ESPN. He is the first Austin-area boys basketball player to earn Texas Gatorade Player of the Year honors since the award began in 2000.
Brown was a four-year starter who earned All-CenTex recognition by the Austin American-Statesman in all four seasons (first four-time selection in the Statesman's history) and was a three-time first-team all-state choice by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC).
