AUSTIN, Texas — Junior guard Andrew Jones registered a team-high 20 points, but the No. 4/4 Texas Men's Basketball team (10-2, 4-1 Big 12) dropped a hard-fought 79-77 decision to No. 15/15 Texas Tech (11-3, 4-2 Big 12) on Wednesday night at the Frank Erwin Center. The loss snapped UT's six-game win streak that dated back to a Dec. 9 home victory against Texas State.
Jones converted 7-of-11 field goals, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, in 34 minutes. Senior forward Jericho Sims tallied a season-high 16 points (5-7 FG), and junior guard Courtney Ramey registered 15 points (4-8 threes). Senior guard Matt Coleman III recorded 13 points (3-6 threes) and six rebounds, while freshman Greg Brown added nine points, a game-high nine rebounds and a career-high four blocked shots.
Texas jumped out to a 9-2 advantage after an Andrew Jones three-pointer with 16:04 remaining. The Longhorns increased their cushion to as much as 12 points (48-36) with 1:40 left in the first half and took a 48-38 lead into the locker room. UT converted 50-percent from the floor (15-30), including an 8-of-14 (.571) mark from three-point range, while scoring a first-half season-high 48 points.
After Andrew Jones hit a pair of free throws to give Texas a 59-49 cushion with 12:21 remaining, the Red Raiders used an 11-3 run to cut the deficit to two points (62-60) following a Kevin McCullar three-point play at the 9:36 mark. Texas Tech claimed its first lead (71-69) since the opening moments of the contest after a Kyler Edwards three-pointer with 3:51 left.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Brown and Ramey helped the Longhorns grab a 77-73 advantage with 1:42 remaining. However, the Red Raiders closed the contest with a 6-0 spurt, capped by a Mac McClung game-winning jumper with three seconds left that broke a 77-77 tie.
Texas returns to action when it hosts Kansas State (5-8, 1-4 Big 12) on Saturday, Jan. 16. Tip is set for 7 p.m. CT at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network.
