SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — University of Texas senior Andrew Jones is one of 20 preseason watch list candidates for the 2022 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced Tuesday. Named after Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual honor in its eighth year recognizes the top shooting guard in Division I men's college basketball.
Jones was one of seven players named Preseason Honorable Mention All-Big 12 last week. He has played in 102 career games (68 starts) and ranks No. 23 on UT's all-time scoring list (1,251 points) entering the season. Jones has reached double figures in scoring 65 times in his career and topped the 20-point mark 11 times. An All-Big 12 Second Team selection last year, he led the team in scoring (14.6 ppg) and ranked third in assists (2.3 apg) and minutes (31.5 mpg) and fourth in rebounding (4.5 rpg).
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds of the selection process. Starting Five Fan Voting will go live on Friday, Oct. 22 at this web site: www.hoophallawards.com. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the award will be narrowed to just 10. In late February, five finalists will be presented to Mr. West and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.
The winner of the 2022 Jerry West Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Point Guard Award, the Julius Erving Small Forward Award, the Karl Malone Power Forward Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award, in addition to the Women's Starting Five.
A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
