SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — University of Texas junior Tre Mitchell is one of 20 preseason watch list candidates for the 2022 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced Thursday. Named after Class of 2010 Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor in its eighth year recognizes the top power forward in Division I men's college basketball.
Mitchell was one of seven players named Preseason Honorable Mention All-Big 12 last week. He spent his first two years at UMass, played in 44 career games (43 starts) and registered 792 points (18.0 ppg) and 315 rebounds (7.2 rpg) while adding 52 blocks and 47 steals for the Minutemen. Mitchell averaged a team-best 18.8 points and 7.2 rebounds in 32.3 minutes per contest as a sophomore in 2020-21 while earning Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team recognition. He was the first UMass player to receive Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team accolades since 2013. Mitchell claimed Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year and Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second-Team recognition in 2019-20, becoming the first UMass freshman to earn all-league honors since Marcus Camby in 1993-94.
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds of the selection process. Starting Five Fan Voting will go live on Friday, Oct. 22 at this web site: www.hoophallawards.com. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the award will be narrowed to just 10. In late February, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.
The winner of the 2022 Karl Malone Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Point Guard Award, the Jerry West Shooting Guard Award, the Julius Erving Small Forward Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award, in addition to the Women's Starting Five.
