AUSTIN, Texas – Reigning NCAA National Champion Texas Rowing announced its 2022 schedule today, featuring a pair of duals against teams that placed in the top-12 at 2021 NCAA championships and the annual Longhorn Invite. The six-time defending Big 12 Conference champions will also host the championship regatta for the second-straight year.
Texas will begin the season in California on March 26-27 at the San Diego Crew Classic, largely regarded as America's premier spring regatta. Racing takes place in Mission Bay Park on Fiesta Bay-Crown Point Shores in San Diego. It will be the Longhorns' first trip to San Diego since 2019, when all four boats finished in the top-four with the novice eight (N8+) placing first overall to claim the Laurel Korholz Perpetual Trophy.
For the second year in a row, Texas will travel to Michigan to face two-time defending Big Ten Champion Wolverines on Belleville Lake on Saturday, April 9. Michigan placed fourth at the 2021 NCAA Championships, collecting 108 points with a fourth-place result in the First Eight Grand Final and sixth-place finishes in the Second Eight and Fours Grand Finals. In last year's meeting, the then-second-ranked Longhorns swept then-No. 7 Michigan in all four races with each boat taking control of the race in the first 500m and extending their lead throughout the course.
Next up, the Longhorns head to New Jersey on Saturday, April 23 to compete against the Princeton. The Tigers finished 12th at last year's NCAA championships, earning a win in the Fours C Final, a runner-up result in the Second C Final and placing fourth in the First Eight Petite Final. Texas last competed raced at Princeton in 2019, where they also faced Yale, winning the Second Eight race and both Fours races, while First Eight claimed third.
The Longhorns will then host back-to-back competitions, starting with the 21st Longhorn Invite on Walter E. Long Lake on April 29-30, the final regular season competition for Texas. Last season in a field that included a pair of top-25 squads in Alabama and SMU, UT swept the competition, winning all three Eights A Finals and both Fours A Finals.
Texas will look to defend its conference crown when the Longhorns host the Big 12 Conference Championship on Sunday, May 15 on Walter E. Long Lake. UT swept last year's regatta, the sixth consecutive sweep of the Big 12 Championship, and for the sixth straight year had six student-athletes earn all-conference honors.
The 2022 season will conclude with the NCAA Championships, to be held for the second consecutive year at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla., Friday-Sunday, May 27-29. Texas has finished in the top-8 in each of the last six NCAA Championship regattas, improving from fourth to third to second to winning it all in the last four contests.
