AUSTIN, Texas — A pair of high school basketball standouts have signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball next season at The University of Texas, head coach Chris Beard announced Wednesday. Dillon Mitchell (Tampa, Fla.) and Arterio Morris (Dallas, Texas) will join the Longhorns for the 2022-23 season.
The two-man class is currently No. 16 nationally by Rivals in the team rankings.
Mitchell (6-7, 195), a forward from Tampa, Fla., who is playing his senior year at Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) under coach Kevin Boyle, is ranked as the No. 18 prospect in the nation by ESPN, No. 28 by 247 Sports Composite and No. 28 by Rivals. In his junior season at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School, he averaged 17.6 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.1 blocks per game while leading his team to a 22-7 overall record.
"Dillon Mitchell is one of the more versatile and explosive prospects in the class," said Paul Biancardi, ESPN national recruiting director for boys' high school basketball. "Currently, he affects the game by finishing plays in the open floor with speed and eye-popping vertical bounce. The long-framed lefty can play both on the perimeter and in the post. Defensively, he displays quickness and length to easily switch one-through-four to contain the ball, get over screens or to defend the low post. Mitchell is one of the few prospects in the class of 2022 that is both productive now with huge upside down the road."
Morris (6-3, 175), a guard from Kimball High School (Dallas, Texas) who plays under coach Nicke Smith, is ranked as the No. 6 prospect in the nation by Rivals, No. 22 by 247 Sports and No. 23 by 247 Sports Composite. He also is the No. 2-ranked player in the state of Texas by Mike Kunstadt of Texas Hoops. As a junior at Kimball, Morris averaged 23.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.2 blocks per game while leading his team to a 26-9 record and a trip to the Class 5A state championship game. He was named The Dallas Morning News' All-Area Player of the Year last season.
"Arterio Morris is ultra athletic, a highlight reel when going to and finishing at the rim," said Mike Kunstadt, president and owner of Texas Hoops. "He's a good ball handler who can create separation between him and his opponent. Arterio is a scorer who is deadly in the open court. He is aggressive and an excellent rebounding guard."
