SPOKANE, Wash. — Senior Timmy Allen posted a team-high 18 points, but No. 5/5 Texas (1-1) fell 86-74 to No. 1/1 Gonzaga (2-0) on Saturday night at the McCarthey Athletic Center. This marked the first top-5 Associated Press matchup that UT had played in since March 8, 2003, when No. 4 Texas rallied for a 76-71 win at No. 5 Oklahoma.
Allen converted 7-of-12 field goals, including 2-of-4 threes, and added a team-best six rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes. Senior Marcus Carr tallied 11 points and three assists in 32 minutes, while senior Jase Febres added 10 points and four rebounds in 27 minutes.
Drew Timme paced Gonzaga with 37 points while converting 15-of-19 field goals on the night.
A Timmy Allen three-pointer gave the Longhorns an early 3-2 advantage at the 19:23 mark. Leading 13-9 with 15:19 remaining, the Bulldogs used a 6-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to build a 19-9 cushion at the 12:53 mark following an Andrew Nembhard three-pointer.
A Courtney Ramey jumper closed the gap to 30-21 with 6:27 left, but Gonzaga answered with an 8-0 spurt over the next three minutes to take a 38-21 lead at the 3:14 mark after a Rasir Bolton layup. The Bulldogs converted 59.4-percent (19-32) in the opening 20 minutes while limiting Texas to 35.7-percent shooting (10-28), including a 3-of-13 mark from three-point range, while building a 47-27 halftime cushion.
Trailing 60-43 following a Timme layup at the 12:08 mark, the Longhorns scored six straight points to trim the margin to 60-49 after an Allen free throw with 10:11 remaining. Texas cut the deficit to 11 points a total of three times in the final 11 minutes but could not get any closer the rest of the way. The Longhorns outscored the Bulldogs by a 47-39 margin in the second half. UT converted 51.6-percent from the floor (16-31), including a 6-of-11 mark (.545), in the final 20 minutes.
Texas returns to action when it hosts Northern Colorado as part of the Abe Lemons Classic on Wednesday, Nov. 17. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network.
