AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas Men's Basketball team will host Sam Houston Presented by American Campus Communities in coordination with Student Government and Texas SAAC in historic Gregory Gymnasium on Monday, Nov. 29. This will mark UT's first men's basketball contest in Gregory Gym since the Longhorns played Baylor on Feb. 26, 1977 in the first round of the Southwest Conference Tournament.
Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Central, and the game will be televised live by Longhorn Network. The Texas-Sam Houston contest is not included in UT's 2021-22 season ticket package. The University is not selling tickets or distributing tickets for this game, as this will be a UT student-only event.
University of Texas students who are Big Ticket Holders will receive free admission to the game on a first-come, first-served basis. Prior to the game, there will be a Party at the Tower from 4:30-6 p.m. at the UT Tower. This event is free for all UT students, who must show their student ID to receive free food from several of Austin's best food trucks. There will be a live concert by Blackillac, voted Austin Music Award's Best Hip Hop/Rap group.
At the end of the pre-game party, Head Coach Chris Beard and the Texas Cheer & Pom will take students from the UT Tower to Gregory Gym. Doors at Gregory Gym open at 6 p.m. The first 2,000 students will receive a Texas Basketball retro shirt and free Stubb's BBQ. UT students are encouraged to come out early for giveaways, games and chances to win prizes, including $1,000 and an iPhone 13 courtesy of American Campus Communities.
Gregory Gym, located in the heart of the UT campus, served as the home of Texas Basketball from the 1930-31 season through the 1976-77 season. The Longhorns earned a 34-33 victory against North Texas on Dec. 5, 1930 in the first men's basketball contest played inside Gregory Gym. Over a span of 47 years, Texas compiled an overall record of 383-160 (.705) in Gregory.
The Texas-Sam Houston contest will mark the first regular-season men's basketball game played inside Gregory Gym since a 90-51 Texas victory against Rice on Feb. 22, 1977. The Longhorns then closed out their time at Gregory with a 72-70 loss to Baylor in the first round of the Southwest Conference Tournament on Feb. 26, 1977.
Texas moved into its current home in the Frank Erwin Center prior to the start of the 1977-78 season. Gregory Gym still serves as the home court for Texas Volleyball.
UT owns a 15-2 lead in the all-time series against Sam Houston, including a 79-63 home win last year (Dec. 16, 2020). The Longhorns and Bearkats have played eight times previously inside Gregory Gym, all coming between the 1939-40 and 1951-52 seasons. Texas holds a 7-1 record against Sam Houston in Gregory Gym.
