AUSTIN, Texas — Seniors Timmy Allen and Andrew Jones both registered 15 points to lead No. 8/8 Texas (4-1) to a 68-44 win against California Baptist (5-1) on Wednesday evening at the Frank Erwin Center. This marked the third and final home game as part of the Abe Lemons Classic, a multi-team event honoring the legacy of the former basketball coach.
Senior Courtney Ramey posted 12 points to become the 40th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Ramey has now scored 1,002 points in 99 career games.
The Longhorns limited CBU to 44 points on 40.5-percent field goal shooting (17-42), including a 12.5-percent mark from three-point range (2-16), on the evening. UT allowed just six assists while forcing 23 turnovers and registered a 25-11 advantage in points off turnovers. CBU entered the game averaging 80.0 points per game while hitting a combined 50.2-percent from the floor, including a 39.6-percent mark from beyond the arc (42-106). The Lancers also had posted an assist-to-turnover ratio of 107-to-74 through their first five contests.
Allen converted 5-of-9 field goals and 4-of-6 free throws while adding a game-high eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in 28 minutes. Jones hit 5-of-10 field goals, including 2-of-4 threes, and 3-of-3 free throws and recorded a season-best five assists in 27 minutes. Senior Christian Bishop also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points on 4-of-6 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws while grabbing five boards in 16 minutes.
Texas scored the first nine points and never trailed in the contest. After a Ty Rowell three-pointer trimmed the deficit to 23-14 at the 5:35 mark, the Longhorns used a 12-0 run over the next four-and-a-half minutes to extend their lead to 35-14 following an Andrew Jones three-point play with 1:03 remaining.
UT limited the Lancers to 30.4-percent FG shooting (7-23), including a 1-of-9 mark from beyond the arc, in the first 20 minutes while building a 35-16 halftime cushion. The Longhorns forced 12 turnovers and posted a 13-6 advantage in points off turnovers in the first half. UT hit 10-of-12 free throws while CBU was 1-of-4 from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes.
A Ty Rowell layup at the 13:51 mark cut the lead to 45-30, but that was as close as the Lancers would get in the second half. Texas responded by scoring the next six points to build a 51-30 advantage following a Bishop layup with 12:02 remaining. The margin did not dip below 17 points for the remainder of the contest.
Texas returns to action when it hosts Sam Houston on Monday, Nov. 29. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Central at historic Gregory Gymnasium on the UT campus, and the game will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network.
