AUSTIN, Texas — Junior Dylan Disu registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 17/18 Texas (10-2) to a 78-33 win against Incarnate Word (2-11) on Tuesday night at the Frank Erwin Center. The Longhorns, who entered the contest leading the nation in scoring defense (53.0 ppg), limited the Cardinals to a tie for the fourth-lowest point total allowed by Texas since the 1949-50 season.
Disu posted his first double-double as a Longhorn while converting 5-of-9 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws and tied his collegiate career best with five blocked shots in 20 minutes. Senior Tre Mitchell joined Disu in double-figure scoring with 14 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks in 20 minutes.
The Longhorns recorded their largest margin of victory (45 points) this year and posted their seventh win by at least 20 points. UT limited the Cardinals to 26.5-percent field goal shooting (13-49), including a 4-of-21 mark (.190) from three-point range, on the night. Texas allowed just five assists while forcing 18 turnovers. On the offensive end, the Longhorns converted 50.8-percent from the floor (33-65) and tallied 23 assists on 33 made field goals. UT recorded a 23-8 assist-to-turnover ratio on the evening.
Texas scored the game's first seven points and never trailed in the contest. After a Benjamin Griscti three-pointer trimmed the margin to 7-3 at the 14:13 mark, the Longhorns went on a 16-6 run over the next eight minutes to build a 23-6 cushion following a Disu jumper with 6:31 left.
Leading 23-9 at the 6:05 mark after a Bradley Akhile three-pointer, Texas closed the half with a 16-5 run capped by a Jase Febres three-pointer with seven seconds remaining to take a 39-14 advantage into the break. The 14 points marked an opponent season low for points allowed in a half by the Longhorns, besting the 15 surrendered in the second half against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Dec. 14. UT held the Cardinals to 23.5-percent FG shooting (4-17) and forced 12 turnovers, while hitting 53.1-percent from the floor (17-32) and posting 10 assists on 17 made field goals in the opening 20 minutes.
Texas opened the second half with an 8-0 run to increase its advantage to 47-14 following a Christian Bishop tip-in at the 17:44 mark. Leading 58-24 with 10:35 remaining, the Longhorns used a 13-2 spurt to build a 71-26 cushion after a Disu jumper at the 4:54 mark. The margin did not dip below 40 points for the remainder of the contest.
Texas returns to action when it hosts West Virginia in the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams on Saturday, Jan. 1. Tip is set for 11 a.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPNU.
