Alfred, Brissett named to The Bowerman Watch List
02.10.2021 | Track & Field / Cross Country
The Longhorn tandem make Texas one of only four schools with two student-athletes on the women’s watch list.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Track and Field's Julien Alfred and Chanel Brissett were two of 10 student-athletes named to The Bowerman's first watch list of 2021 on Wednesday. It is the third career watch-list appearance for Alfred, and the ninth for Brissett – the most of anyone in Wednesday's announcement.
Alfred, Castries, St. Lucia native, currently ranks No. 2 in the NCAA in the 60-meter dash after clocking a 7.15 in the prelims at the Charlie Thomas Invitational last Saturday. She also ran a 7.17 to win the final later that same day. Alfred's mark in College Station further established her as one of the top sprinters in Texas history. At 60 meters, she now owns the school record (7.10 – Jan. 2020), five of the top eight times (all 7.15 or lower) and seven of the top 12 times (all 7.18 or lower). She earned All-America honors and won Big 12 titles in the 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay last season as a sophomore. Alfred's success at the Big 12 Championships made her the first Longhorn to win three conference titles indoors in the same season since Marshevet Hooker in 2006. Alfred was also the first Big 12 competitor to win the conference's sprint double (60m, 200m) since Hooker in 2006.
Brissett, a Philadelphia native, currently ranks second in the nation in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.05 that she ran in her UT debut at the Wooo Pig Classic back on Jan. 22. Brissett's time tied her with Morgan Snow (Goodwin) for No. 5 on Texas' top performers list and helped her win the event in her first time competing as a Longhorn. Prior to her arrival at Texas this year, Brissett was a two-time NCAA Champion, five-time USTFCCCA All-American and four-time Pac-12 Champion at USC. She won the NCAA Indoor 60-meter hurdles title in 2019 and helped the Trojans win the 4x100-meter relay at the NCAA Outdoor meet that same year. Brissett is the No. 2 performer in both the 60-meter hurdles and 100-meter hurdles on USC record.
The Bowerman, first awarded in 2009, is presented annually by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) to the year's most outstanding collegiate male and female track and field athletes (indoor and outdoor combined). Alfred and Brissett will look to join 2016 recipient Courtney Okolo as Longhorns to win the prestigious award.
The Bowerman will release this year's first men's watch list on Thursday, Feb. 11. Following that, the next updated will be on March 3 for the women and March 4 for the men following the indoor conference championships. The watch list represents the consensus among members of The Bowerman Watch List committees in regard to who is currently on their radar for consideration to win this year's award. These student-athletes may or may not have competed yet this year, but based on their past credentials have the attention of the committee.
