Courtney Ramey posted a career-high 28 points while hitting 7-of-8 from three-point range.
AUSTIN, Texas — Junior guard Courtney Ramey registered a career-high 28 points, but No. 12/13 Texas (13-6, 7-5 Big 12 Conference) dropped an 84-82 decision to No. 13/15 West Virginia (15-6, 8-4 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center. Ramey converted 9-of-13 field goals, including a career-best 7-of-8 from three-point range, in 28 minutes.
Senior guard Matt Coleman III recorded 20 points while hitting 8-of-9 field goals, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, and added seven assists in 38 minutes. Senior forward Jericho Sims added 14 points while converting 7-of-9 field goals in 24 minutes.
Texas hit 54.2-percent (32-59) from the floor, including a season-high 14-of-26 (season-best 53.8-percent) from three-point range during the contest. WVU converted 26-of-37 from the free throw line, while the Longhorns hit 4-of-10 free throws.
UT built a 53-43 halftime advantage by knocking down 70-percent of its field goal attempts (21-30), including a 58.3-percent mark (7-12) from three-point range, in the opening half. It marked the most points scored by Texas in a half this season, topping the previous high of 48 set twice previously.
After the break, the Longhorns hit three consecutive three-pointers to extend their cushion to 19 points (62-43) at the 18:18 mark. West Virginia responded with a 12-2 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to trim the margin to 64-55 after a Sean McNeil three-pointer with 14:51 left.
Texas held a 72-62 advantage following a Sims dunk at the 10:13 mark, but the Mountaineers used a 19-4 spurt over a six-minute span to grab an 81-76 lead after three McNeil free throws. Ramey hit back-to-back threes to give Texas an 82-81 lead with 2:55 remaining, but the Longhorns were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest. WVU used two Taz Sherman free throws and one Miles McBride free throw to account for the final margin, and neither team scored in the final 1:48.
The Longhorns return to action when they host No. 23/24 Kansas on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Tip is set for 8 p.m. CT at the Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
