LUBBOCK, Texas — Senior forward Jericho Sims posted a team-high 11 points and seven rebounds, but No. 14/16 Texas (14-7 8-6 Big 12) dropped a 68-59 decision at No. 18/17 Texas Tech (15-8, 7-7 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at United Supermarkets Arena. The Longhorns were held to 34.7-percent field goal shooting (17-49) during the loss, including a 20-percent mark (5-25) in the second half.
Sims converted 4-of-5 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws in 28 minutes of action. Senior guard Matt Coleman III was the only other Longhorn to reach double figures in scoring with 10 points and six assists.
Leading 19-17 at the 7:15 mark, the Longhorns used a Coleman three-pointer and a Kai Jones dunk to build a 24-17 cushion with 6:09 remaining. The Red Raiders answered with a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to grab a 31-28 advantage following a Micah Peavy jumper at the 1:08 mark.
Coleman finished the half on back-to-back possessions with a driving dunk and a step-back three-pointer just before the buzzer to even the score at 33-33 at the break. The Longhorns hit 50-percent from the floor (12-24), including a 5-of-10 mark from three-point range, in the opening 20 minutes.
Texas Tech took control of the contest with a 19-6 run over the first eight-and-a-half minutes of the second half to build a 52-39 lead at the 11:29 mark. UT missed its first 11 field goal attempts of the second half, as Brock Cunningham nailed a three-pointer to trim the gap to 52-42 with 11:02 remaining.
Trailing 57-48 after three Mac McClung free throws at the 6:45 mark, Texas rallied to trim the margin to three points (59-56) following an Andrew Jones three-pointer with 3:22 remaining. That was as close as the Longhorns could get, and Texas Tech hit five free throws in the final 47 seconds to seal the win.
The Longhorns return to action when they travel to face Iowa State on Tuesday, March 2. Tip is set for 6 p.m. CT at Hilton Coliseum, and the game will be streamed nationally by Big 12 Now/ESPN+.
