The Longhorns fell to 13-5 for the year with a close loss at home on Saturday night.
AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Women's Basketball team dropped a nail-biter to No. 21/24 West Virginia, 81-75, on Saturday at the Frank Erwin Center. The loss drops Texas to 13-5 overall and 7-4 in Big 12 play this season.
After a tough opening quarter, the Longhorns responded by outscoring West Virginia, 29-21, in the second frame to take a one-point lead (40-39) into halftime. Charli Collier led the way, scoring 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting (2-2 3FG) and blocking two shots. Joanne Allen-Taylor and Celeste Taylor both also chipped in with each adding nine points apiece to the Texas tally.
Collier, an All-America candidate, finished with 21 points, six rebounds and two blocks. She scored the first seven points of the second half for Texas en route to posting her 12th 20-point game this season. The Mont Belvieu, Texas native went 8-for-11 (72.7%) from the floor on Saturday, and has shot 75.9 percent (22-for-29) over her last two games. Over her last six games, Collier has grabbed 96 rebounds – an average of 16.0 per game.
In a back-and-forth contest, Allen-Taylor drained a 3-pointer with just under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to pull Texas back within one of the Mountaineers (69-70). Over those last five minutes though, Texas was outscored by WVU, 11-6, sealing the Longhorns' defeat.
Texas is scheduled to compete in the second half of a two-game homestand on Wednesday night, Feb. 10, when Oklahoma State comes to town. Tip-off at the Frank Erwin Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT on Longhorn Network.
