The Longhorns bested 11th-seeded Bradley, 81-62, on Monday night.
SAN MARCOS, Texas – The sixth-seeded Texas Women's Basketball team knocked off No. 11 seed Bradley, 81-62, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Monday night at Strahan Arena.
After sluggish start from the floor, the Longhorns broke out on a 13-0 run to take a 19-7 lead after the opening quarter. It marked the 14th time that Texas has held its opponent to under 10 points in a quarter. UT's first-quarter run was sparked by an Audrey Warren 3-pointer at the 3:51 mark, and was of three long-range makes during the run. Joanne Allen-Taylor and Charli Collier capped the run with triples of their own, with Collier's coming on the final shot of the frame.
Warren was Texas' biggest contributor throughout the first half of Monday night's game, tallying 15 points (5-8 FG) and four rebounds during 18 minutes of action. The Fort Worth native, making her second career appearance in the NCAA Tournament, finished with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Texas also got a productive night out of Charli Collier, with the All-American and Lisa Leslie Award finalist scoring 23 points and grabbing 15 rebounds against Bradley. It marked Collier's 18th double-double of the season, tied for the second-most of any Division I player. In addition, it was her 17th 20-point game of the season. Entering the NCAA Tournament, Collier had recorded nine more 20-point games than any other Leslie Award finalist this year. Collier nearly logged a double-double in the first half alone, scoring 11 points and nine rebounds to help Texas boast a 44-30 lead after two quarters of play.
Celeste Taylor was another stat-stuffer for the Longhorns Monday night, tallying eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals. It was the eighth time this season that Taylor has logged at least three steals in a game.
In the third quarter, it was Kyra Lambert who anchored the offense with a team-high eight points in the quarter. Those were the only eight points of the night for Lambert, but were critical in helping the Longhorns maintain a 14-point lead (65-51) with 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
The Longhorns will now face third-seeded UCLA (No. 9/9) in the second round on Wednesday night. Tip-off from the Alamodome's North Court is set for 8 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
