AUSTIN, Texas — Jaylon Tyson has signed an Athletic Scholarship Agreement (ASA) to play basketball next season at The University of Texas, head coach Chris Beard announced Wednesday. Tyson will join the Longhorns for the upcoming 2021-22 season.
Tyson (6-6, 185), a guard/forward from Plano, Texas who played at John Paul II High School under coach Dan Lee, is ranked as the No. 34 prospect in the nation by Rivals, No. 35 by 247 Sports Composite and No. 42 by ESPN.
As a senior, Tyson paced John Paul II to a 26-2 overall record and a trip to the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) class 6A state semifinals. He earned first-team TAPPS all-state and district Most Valuable Player accolades after averaging 22.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
In his junior season, Tyson averaged 23.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while leading John Paul II to a 40-1 record and the school's first-ever TAPPS class 6A state championship. He earned first-team TAPPS all-state and district MVP honors as a junior.
