COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — University of Texas guard Devin Askew is one of 27 athletes invited to the 2021 USA Basketball Men's U19 World Cup Team training camp, USA Basketball announced Thursday. The athletes, age 19 years old or younger, will compete June 20-22 on the campus of TCU (Fort Worth, Texas) in hopes of being named to the 12-member team that will represent the USA at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup for Men.
Askew, a guard from Sacramento, Calif., played in 25 games (20 starts) as a freshman at Kentucky in the 2020-21 season. He averaged 6.5 points, 2.9 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game and ranked second on the team in assists (73). Askew reached double figures in scoring seven times, including a season-high 14 points to go along with four assists and two steals against No. 11/10 Tennessee.
During his senior season (2019-20) at Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana, Calif.), Askew was ranked as the No. 26 overall prospect in the nation by ESPN and earned a spot in the prestigious Jordan Brand Classic. He averaged 16.7 points, 6.3 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game as a senior and claimed first-team California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and Trinity League Player of the Year honors. Askew, who was the consensus No. 1 point guard in the 2021 class, reclassified to be a part of the class of 2020.
Askew was a member of the 2019 USA 3x3 U18 World Cup Team that claimed an historic first gold medal for the USA with a 7-0 record in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Featuring U19 teams from 16 nations, the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup is scheduled to be held July 3-11 in Riga and Daugavpils, Latvia. In addition to the USA and host Latvia, teams that will take part in this summer's U19 World Cup include Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, France, Japan, Lithuania, Mali, Puerto Rico, Senegal, Serbia, South Korea, Spain and Turkey.
The USA was drawn into Group D, alongside Australia, Mali and Turkey for the July 3-6 FIBA U19 World Cup preliminary round. The USA will open play against Turkey on July 3, followed by Mali on July 4 and close preliminary play against Australia on July 6.
Reigning FIBA U19 World Cup gold medalist, USA men's teams have won seven gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal while compiling an 98-14 overall record in U19 World Cup play since the event was launched in 1979. The USA has won four of the past six U19 golds since 2009.
