AUSTIN, Texas — Marcus Carr has signed an Athletic Scholarship Agreement (ASA) to play basketball next season at The University of Texas, head coach Chris Beard announced Monday. Carr, who played the previous two years at the University of Minnesota, will join the Longhorns for the upcoming 2021-22 season.
Carr (6-2, 195), a point guard from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, played and started all 60 games during his two years at Minnesota and registered 1,041 points (17.4 ppg) and 348 assists (5.8 apg). He posted a 2.32 assist-to-turnover ratio (348 assists, 150 turnovers) during those two seasons, and his 5.8 assists-per-game mark is tops in school history for career assists average (previous: 5.7 by Ray Williams, 1976-77). Carr, who spent his freshman year at the University of Pittsburgh (2017-18), owns three-year collegiate totals of 1,361 points (14.8 ppg), 477 assists (5.2 apg) and 370 rebounds (4.0 rpg) in 92 career games (87 starts).
As a redshirt junior in 2020-21, Carr earned All-Big Ten First Team (Associated Press), All-Big Ten Second Team (media) and All-Big Ten Third team (coaches) recognition and claimed a spot on the United States Basketball Writers' Association (USBWA) All-District V Team. He ranked first in the Big Ten in minutes played (35.8 mpg), third in scoring (19.4 ppg) and assists (4.9 apg) and sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.1). Carr, who played and started all 29 games, also was one of 10 midseason candidates for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award.
He reached double figures in scoring in 26 of 29 contests last season, including 12 games with at least 20 points and four 30-point efforts. Carr scored a career-high 41 points at Nebraska (Feb. 27, 2021), just one shy of Minnesota's single-game scoring mark (42, twice). He earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors on Dec. 28, 2020, after he registered 30 points (6-13 threes) and eight assists in an overtime win against No. 4 Iowa.
During his redshirt sophomore season in 2019-20, Carr earned All-Big Ten Third Team accolades by the media while leading the team in scoring (15.4 ppg), assists (6.68 apg) and minutes (36.8 mpg). He established a new school single-season record with 207 assists and posted a 2.52 assist-to-turnover ratio (207 assists, 82 turnovers).
Carr, who played and started all 31 games, led the Big Ten and ranked ninth nationally in minutes played (1142 minutes, 36.8 mpg) and ranked second in the league and ninth nationally in assists (207 assists, 6.7 apg). He reached double figures in scoring 24 times, including eight games with at least 20 points, and tallied four double-doubles. Carr sat out the 2018-19 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
As a freshman at Pittsburgh in 2017-18, he led the team in assists (4.0 apg) and steals (20) and ranked third in scoring (10.0 ppg). Carr played in 32 games (27 starts) and reached double figures in scoring 14 times and posted double figures in assists twice. An All-ACC Academic Team selection, he posted season highs of 23 points against Mount St. Mary's and 12 assists versus Syracuse.
Carr played his junior and senior years of high school at Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.). As a senior in 2016-17, he averaged 9.1 points, 3.7 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game while helping Montverde register a 26-5 record and a runner-up finish at the DICK's High School Nationals.
Carr attended St. Michael's College School in Toronto during his freshman and sophomore seasons and garnered a pair of All-Canadian honors. In his sophomore year, he averaged 16.0 points, 5.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game and led his team to a 48-1 mark and an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championship. Carr also played on Canada's Under-16 FIBA Americas team in the summer of 2015, helping the squad post a 4-1 record and earn a silver medal.
