This marks the first time since 2011 that the Longhorns have had multiple picks in the NBA Draft.
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Former University of Texas basketball standout Greg Brown was selected as the No. 43 pick by the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2021 NBA Draft on Thursday evening at Barclays Center. Brown's draft rights were traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.
Brown is the second Longhorn to be selected in the 2021 NBA Draft, joining Kai Jones who was taken at No. 19 overall by the New York Knicks (draft rights traded to the Charlotte Hornets). This marks the first time since 2011 that UT has had at least two players selected in the same draft, as the trio of Tristan Thompson, Jordan Hamilton and Cory Joseph all went in the first round that year.
During his one season at Texas, Brown received honorable mention All-Big 12 recognition and earned a spot on the five-person Big 12 All-Newcomer Team and five-person Big 12 All-Freshman Team. He played in 26 of a possible 27 games (24 starts) and ranked second on the team in rebounding (6.2 rpg) and blocks (26) and fourth in scoring (9.3 ppg) in 20.7 minutes per contest. Brown converted 42.0-percent from the floor (81-193), including a 33.0-percent mark from three-point range (30-91), and 70.8-percent from the free throw line (51-72). A two-time Phillips 66 Big 12 Newcomer of the Week selection (Dec. 21 and Jan. 11), he reached double figures in scoring in 13 games and double digits in rebounds five times, and he recorded four double-doubles.
Since the NBA Draft began in 1947, a total of 47 Longhorns have now heard their names called on draft night. Texas has produced 19 first-round selections and 12 second-round picks in program history. UT has now had 22 players drafted in the last 23 years, dating back to the 1999 Draft.
