TOKYO, Japan — Former University of Texas standout Kevin Durant recorded a game-high 29 points to lead Team USA to an 87-82 win against France in the gold medal game at the 2020 Olympics on Saturday afternoon. Durant is the first player in Texas Basketball history and the second in USA Men's Basketball history (Carmelo Anthony) to capture three gold medals, as he also led Team USA to the gold at the 2012 London Games and the 2016 Rio Games.
Durant, who had 21 of his 29 points in the first half, converted 9-of-18 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws to go along with six rebounds and three assists without a turnover in a game-high 35 minutes in the win against France. He also hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Durant reached double figures in scoring in all six contests at the Tokyo Olympics and in all 22 career games played in Olympic competition. During the six contests in Rio, Durant led Team USA in scoring (20.7 ppg) and minutes (27.5 mpg), tied for the team lead in blocks (7) and ranked second in rebounding (5.3 rpg) and assists (22). He converted 45-of-85 (.529) field goals, including 15-of-40 (.375) from three-point range, and 19-of-21 (.905) free throws.
Durant is the third Longhorn men's basketball player to earn a gold medal, joining Gilbert "Gib" Ford (USA, 1956) and Jay Arnette (USA, 1960). He is the fourth player in UT Men's Basketball history to compete in the Olympics, as Albert Almanza also represented Mexico in 1960 and 1964.
