AMES, Iowa — Senior Andrew Jones registered a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds, but No. 21/22 Texas (13-4, 3-2 Big 12) dropped a 79-70 decision at No. 15/16 Iowa State (14-3, 2-3 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. The Longhorns committed a season-high 20 turnovers, and the Cyclones hit 56.9-percent from the floor on the afternoon.
Jones added a season-high seven rebounds while converting 6-of-10 field goals, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, and blocked two shots in 28 minutes. Senior Marcus Carr added 15 points, six assists and two steals in 35 minutes, and senior Courtney Ramey posted 10 points and four rebounds in 34 minutes.
Texas opened the game by scoring the first five points and holding the Cyclones scoreless until the 16:13 mark. A Jones three-pointer gave the Longhorns an 11-7 advantage with 12:45 remaining, but Iowa State responded with six straight points to take a 13-11 lead after a Gabe Kalscheur jumper at the 10:23 mark.
A Marcus Carr jumper trimmed the margin to 26-22 with 5:47 left, before the Cyclones used an 8-0 run to build a 34-22 cushion following another Kalscheur jumper at the 3:55 mark. Texas answered with a 7-0 spurt over the next two-and-a-half minutes to close the gap to 34-29 after a Brock Cunningham jumper with 1:24 remaining. The Cyclones scored four of the final six points to take a 38-31 lead into the break.
Texas committed 13 turnovers and Iowa State registered an 18-3 advantage in points off turnovers in the first half. Jones had 13 points while hitting 4-of-7 field goals, including 3-of-5 threes, during the opening 20 minutes.
After a Carr three-pointer cut the deficit to 43-36 at the 17:32 mark, the Cyclones scored eight-straight points to increase their cushion to 51-36 following a Kalscheur three-pointer with 16:15 left. Trailing 64-50 at the 7:54 mark, the Longhorns used an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to trim the margin to 64-58 after a pair of Timmy Allen free throws with 5:37 remaining.
Texas narrowed the lead to five points (67-62) following a pair of Ramey free throws at the 4:17 mark, but that was as close as the Longhorns could get the rest of the way. Iowa State converted 60.9-percent from the floor (14-23), including a 6-of-12 mark from three-point range, over the final 20 minutes.
Texas returns to action when it hosts Kansas State on Tuesday, Jan. 18. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network.
