Timmy Allen becomes the fifth active NCAA Division I player to reach 1,500 career points, 600 career boards and 300 career assists.
STILLWATER, Okla. — Seniors Timmy Allen and Andrew Jones both registered 10 points, but No. 14/16 Texas (12-3, 2-1 Big 12) dropped a 64-51 decision at Oklahoma State (8-5, 1-1 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Allen became the fifth active NCAA Division I player to reach 1,500 career points, 600 career rebounds and 300 career assists.
Allen joined Grant Golden (Richmond), Chandler Jacobs (Colorado State), Dimitrius Underwood (College of Charleston) and Eli Scott (Loyola Marymount) as the only active Division I players to reach the statistical milestone. Allen now owns career totals of 1,501 points, 637 rebounds and 301 assists. He hit 5-of-10 field goals and added six rebounds, three assists, three steals and one blocked shot in 32 minutes.
Jones, who did not play in Tuesday's win at K-State (health and safety protocols), returned to the rotation on Saturday and reached double digits in scoring while posting four rebounds in 22 minutes.
The Cowboys hit 16-of-23 free throws on the afternoon, while Texas went just 5-of-7 from the line. UT also committed a team season-high 14 turnovers, and Oklahoma State registered an 18-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
Oklahoma State scored the game's opening six points and never trailed in the contest. A Courtney Ramey three-pointer trimmed the margin to 13-12 at the 8:51 mark, but the Cowboys answered with a 13-5 run to build a 26-17 advantage following a Keylan Boone three-pointer with 5:32 remaining.
Trailing 30-23 after a Bryce Thompson jumper at the 3:10 mark, the Longhorns closed the half with an Allen dunk and a Devin Askew three-pointer to cut the deficit to 30-28 at the break. Texas committed 10 turnovers and the Cowboys registered a 15-8 margin in points off turnovers during the opening 20 minutes.
UT trimmed the margin to 40-38 following three free throws from Ramey with 12:31 remaining, but Oklahoma State answered with a 7-2 spurt over the next three-and-a-half minutes to increase its cushion to 47-40 after a Rondel Walker layup at the 9:09 mark. Marcus Carr hit one-of-two free throws with 3:29 left to pull the Longhorns to within 52-50, but that was as close as Texas could get the rest of the way. The Cowboys sealed the victory with a 12-1 run over the final 3:10.
Texas returns to action when it hosts Oklahoma on Tuesday, Jan. 11. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network.
