SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — University of Texas senior Timmy Allen is one of 20 preseason watch list candidates for the 2023 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday. Named after Class of 1993 Hall of Famer and 16-year professional basketball player Julius Erving, the annual honor recognizes the top small forward in Division I men's college basketball.
Allen was recently named to the six-person Preseason All-Big 12 team. He earned All-Big 12 Second Team, Big 12 All-Newcomer Team, NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) All-District 8 Second Team and USBWA All-District VII Team accolades during the 2021-22 season. The only Longhorn to start all 34 games last year, he paced the team in scoring (12.1 ppg), rebounding (6.4 rpg) and steals (42) and ranked second in assists (71) and third in minutes played (29.0 mpg).
Allen converted 49.3-percent from the floor (150-304) and 73.1-percent from the free throw line (106-145) during the 2021-22 season. He reached double figures in scoring a team-best 22 times and reached double digits in rebounds three times last year.
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds of the selection process. Starting Five Fan Voting will go live on Friday, Oct. 28 at this web site: www.hoophallawards.com. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the award will be narrowed to just 10. In late February, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Erving and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.
The winner of the 2023 Julius Erving Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), the Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), the Karl Malone Award (Power Forward) and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center), in addition to the Women's Starting Five.
A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
