Carr ties UT single-game record for most three-pointers made in a game (10) while tying his career high with 41 points on Tuesday night.
AUSTIN — Graduate guard Marcus Carr tied the UT single-game record for most three-pointers made in a game (10) and tied his career high with 41 points to pace No. 6/6 Texas (11-1) to a 97-72 win over Texas A&M-Commerce (4-10) on Tuesday evening at Moody Center. Carr, who converted 10-of-15 from beyond the arc, tied the school record for most three-pointers made in a game set by Al Coleman against Kansas State on Jan. 12, 1997.
Carr became the first Texas player to record at least 40 points in a game since Reggie Freeman scored 43 in a home win against Fresno State on Dec. 14, 1996. Carr's 41 points tied his collegiate career high in scoring, as he also tallied 41 while playing for Minnesota in a game at Nebraska on Feb. 27, 2021. On Tuesday evening, Carr registered 41 points while hitting 13-of-19 field goals, including 10-of-15 threes, and 5-of-6 free throws to go along with four assists against one turnover, two steals and one rebound in 30 minutes.
In 18 first-half minutes, Carr posted 33 points while hitting 11-of-15 field goals, including 8-of-11 three-pointers, and 3-of-4 free throws. Carr tied the school record for most points scored in a half (Jim Krivacs had 33 in the second half vs. Northern Montana on Nov. 27, 1978) and set the school record for most points scored in a first half (topping the 29 by B.J. Tyler in the first half at Baylor on Jan. 19, 1994). Carr also set the school record for most three-pointers made in a half with eight, bettering the old mark of six which was done seven times previously.
Associate Head Coach Rodney Terry improved to 4-0 as acting head coach for the Longhorns. UT played before a sellout crowd (10,763) at Moody Center for the eighth-straight game this season.
Freshman Dillon Mitchell posted a career-high 16 points while hitting 8-of-9 field goals in 27 minutes. Freshman Arterio Morris added 12 points, three boards and two steals in 17 minutes.
As a team, the Longhorns converted 56.1-percent (37-66) from the floor, including a 44.4-percent (12-27) mark from three-point range, and registered 28 assists against just 10 turnovers. Texas recorded a 31-2 advantage in fast-break points and a 29-10 margin in points off turnovers.
Texas jumped out to a 14-5 lead following a Timmy Allen three-point play at the 15:59 mark. The Lions responded with a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to even the score at 14-14 after a Kalen Williams layup with 11:04 remaining.
The Longhorns answered with a 17-4 spurt over the next five minutes to build a 31-18 advantage following a Carr three-pointer at the 6:19 mark. Texas A&M-Commerce trimmed the lead to 36-27 after a pair of Luka Vasic free throws with 2:41 left, before Texas closed the half with an 11-2 run to take a 47-29 cushion into the break. UT converted 9-of-15 (.600) from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes.
The Lions cut the deficit to 14 points on two occasions midway through the second half, the latest coming after an Alonzo Dodd layup made it 62-48 at the 12:11 mark. The Longhorns immediately responded with a 7-0 run over the next 90 seconds to build a 69-48 advantage following another Carr three-pointer with 10:27 remaining, and the lead did not dip below 20 points for the rest of the night. UT increased its cushion to as much as 32 points (92-60) after a pair of Carr free throws with 3:40 left.
Texas is back on the court on Saturday, Dec. 31 when it travels to face Oklahoma in the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams. Tip is set for 1 p.m. Central at the Noble Center, and the game will be streamed by Big 12 Now/ESPN+.
