Andrew Jones paces four Longhorns in double figures with a game-high 21 points.
AUSTIN, Texas — Senior Andrew Jones posted a game-high 21 points to lead No. 20/22 Texas (20-8, 9-6 Big 12) to a 75-66 victory against TCU (17-9, 6-8 Big 12) on Wednesday evening at the Frank Erwin Center. This marked the first time Texas had reached the 20-win mark in the month of February since the 2013-14 season.
Jones converted 7-of-15 field goals and a season-best 7-of-8 free throws while adding two assists and two rebounds in 35 minutes. Senior Marcus Carr tallied 19 points, including 16 in the second half, while hitting 6-of-14 field goals and 7-of-8 free throws and added four rebounds and two assists in 37 minutes.
Senior Timmy Allen recorded 17 points while converting 5-of-9 field goals and 7-of-8 free throws and posted seven rebounds, two assists and two steals in 34 minutes. Senior Christian Bishop registered 10 points, seven rebounds and a career-best five blocked shots in 28 minutes.
The Longhorns jumped out to an early 8-2 advantage following an Allen layup with 16:58 remaining. After another Allen layup gave Texas a 14-9 cushion at the 13:27 mark, the Horned Frogs used a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to grab a 19-14 lead following a Micah Peavy jumper with 10:23 left.
UT trimmed the deficit to a single point on three different occasions in the first half, but TCU retained the lead for the remainder of the first half. A Jones layup cut the margin to 32-30 at the 1:05 mark, but a Francisco Farabello three-pointer in the final second gave the Horned Frogs a 35-30 cushion at the break. TCU hit 65.2-percent from the floor (15-23), including a 5-of-7 mark from three-point range, in the opening 20 minutes.
Trailing 37-30, Texas scored six straight points to cut the gap to 37-36 after a Carr layup at the 17:43 mark. The Horned Frogs responded with an 11-2 run over the next four-plus minutes to build a 48-38 advantage following a Mike Miles Jr. layup with 13:20 remaining.
UT immediately answered with a 17-2 run over the next six minutes to grab a 55-50 lead after a Jones jumper at the 7:25 mark. The Longhorns increased their cushion to 61-53 following a pair of Jones free throws with 4:26 remaining.
TCU trimmed the margin to three points (62-59) after two free throws by Chuck O'Bannon at the 2:54 mark, but that was as close as the Horned Frogs would get the rest of the way. Texas pushed its lead to as much as 11 points (75-64) with 35 seconds remaining following two free throws by Jones.
Texas returns to action when it travels to face West Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 26. Tip is set for 1 p.m. Central (2 p.m. Eastern) at the WVU Coliseum, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
