Carr and Jones each record 14 points to lead the Longhorns to their largest win over the Cyclones since the 2010-11 season.
AUSTIN, Texas — Seniors Marcus Carr and Andrew Jones each posted 14 points to lead No. 23/21 Texas (17-6, 6-4 Big 12) to a 63-41 victory against No. 20/22 Iowa State (16-7, 3-7 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center. The 22-point win marked the largest margin of victory by the Longhorns against Iowa State since a 76-53 home win on Feb. 22, 2011.
Carr hit 6-of-12 field goals (2-of-4 threes) and added a season-high eight assists and five rebounds in 34 minutes. Jones converted 5-of-10 field goals, tying a season high with four three-pointers, and posted two assists and two steals in 23 minutes. Senior Christian Bishop also reached double figures in scoring with 10 points (5-7 FG) while adding seven rebounds (four offensive) and two blocks in a season-best 29 minutes.
The Longhorns, who entered the game leading the nation in scoring defense at 55.5 ppg, limited the Cyclones to a season-low 41 points on 28.6-percent field goal shooting (14-49), including a 2-of-15 mark (.133) from three-point range. Texas held its ninth opponent this year to 50 points or below and improved to 17-0 when holding its opponent below 60 points.
Texas jumped out to a 10-3 advantage following a Jones three-pointer at the 17:02 mark. The Cyclones responded with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to grab a 14-10 lead after a three-point play from Izaiah Brockington with 13:14 remaining.
Iowa State built a 23-20 cushion following a layup by Tristan Enaruna at the 2:07 mark. The Longhorns scored the final five points of the half, including a Carr three-pointer with one second remaining, to take a 25-23 advantage into the break. Texas held the Cyclones to 32-percent field goal shooting (8-25), including a 1-of-7 mark (.143) from three-point range, in the opening 20 minutes. UT also registered a 13-0 advantage in points off turnovers in the first half.
Iowa State trimmed the margin to two points (28-26) on a Robert Jones free throw at the 18:21 mark, but Texas never relinquished its lead in the second half. Jones knocked down a three-pointer to give the Longhorns a 38-31 cushion with 15:32 remaining, before the Cyclones responded with a 5-0 spurt over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to 38-36 following a Tyrese Hunter free throw at the 12:26 mark.
Another three from Jones with 12:15 left started a 15-0 run over the next six minutes, capped by a Carr jumper at the 6:20 mark which provided the Longhorns a 53-36 cushion. The margin did not dip below 15 points for the remainder of the game. UT held the Cyclones to just 18 points on 25-percent field goal shooting (6-24), including a 1-of-8 mark (.125) from three-point range, in the final 20 minutes.
Texas returns to action when it hosts No. 10/10 Kansas on Monday, Feb. 7. Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
