Timmy Allen posts a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds, but Longhorns lose in Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship quarterfinals.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Senior Timmy Allen posted a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds, but No. 22/22 Texas (21-11) dropped a 65-60 decision against TCU (20-11) on Thursday afternoon at T-Mobile Center in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship quarterfinals.
Allen converted 6-of-11 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws and added three steals, two assists and one block in 36 minutes. Five of his nine rebounds came off the offensive glass. Senior Courtney Ramey also reached double figures in scoring with 15 points (6-14 FG, 3-7 threes) and grabbed a season-high nine rebounds to go along with three assists in 37 minutes.
The Longhorns jumped out to a 7-2 advantage after a Marcus Carr layup with 14:48 remaining. TCU responded with a 10-0 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to take a 12-7 lead following a Damion Baugh three-pointer at the 11:07 mark. Texas scored five straight points to even the score at 12-12 after a Christian Bishop layup with 9:28 left.
A Devin Askew free throw gave the Longhorns a 20-16 cushion at the 6:00 mark, before a Micah Peavy three-point play trimmed the margin to 20-19 with 5:47 left. Texas scored the next nine points to build a 29-19 lead after a Brock Cunningham three-pointer with 3:15 remaining. The Longhorns continued the run, closing the half with a 20-3 spurt over the final 5:38 to take a 40-22 advantage into the break.
Texas converted 65.2-percent from the field (15-23), including a 7-of-11 mark (.636) from three-point range while building its 18-point cushion. The Longhorns limited TCU to 22 points on 29.0-percent shooting from the floor (9-31), including a 2-of-9 mark (.222) from three-point range in the first half. Eight of UT's nine players who saw game action in the first half scored, and six different Longhorns converted a three-pointer in the opening 20 minutes.
TCU opened the second half with an 8-2 spurt to trim the deficit to 42-30 following a pair of Baugh free throws at the 17:10 mark. The Horned Frogs cut the gap to 44-35 after a pair of Chuck O'Bannon free throws with 14:29 remaining, but the Longhorns used a 6-2 burst to increase their cushion to 50-37 at the 12:07 mark.
A Mike Miles three-pointer started a 16-2 run over the next five-plus minutes that gave the Horned Frogs a 53-52 edge after an Emanuel Miller jumper with 6:45 left. Trailing 55-54, Texas used an Allen jumper and a Ramey three-pointer to take a 59-55 lead at the 2:41 mark.
TCU answered with five straight points to grab a 60-59 advantage following an Eddie Lampkin layup with 1:25 left. A Bishop free throw tied the score at 60-60 at the 1:01 mark, but the Horned Frogs scored the final five points of the contests to seal their victory.
Texas will wait to hear its draw for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. CBS will unveil the pairings on its Selection Sunday show on Sunday, March 13 at 5 p.m. Central.
