Floréal sweeps coach of the year award for second-straight year
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Track and Field head coach Edrick Floréal and senior Jonathan Jones earned Big 12 Conference end of the year awards on Wednesday.
Floréal was named the Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year and has now swept the conference's honor for the second-straight season. In his fourth season at the helm of the Longhorns, Floréal led Texas to sweep both team titles for the second year in a row, just the second time the sweep has ever occurred in the conference. The No. 3 women's track and field team earned its fifth-straight team title after tallying 136 points, highlighted by five event wins. The women's 200m and 400m also swept the top three spots to lead Texas to the title.
The No. 4 men's side claimed its second team title in as many years after 171 points and five event wins. Tripp Piperi earned his eighth shot put title, while the men's 800m and mile saw two top-two finishes in both events.
Jones was named the Men's Track and Field Performer of the Year after defending his 600-yard title after a world-best time. His time of 1:06.68 is the Big 12 Indoor Championship meet record and leads the NCAA. Jones was also part of the Texas winning 4x400 relay team that posted a time of 3:04.19 to break the Texas program record. Jones also set the 800m program record this season at the Tiger Paw Invite with a time of 1:46.93.
