AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas sophomore Peyton Stearns has been named the Big 12 Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Stearns earned her second weekly conference honor of her career, as she previously claimed the accolade on Feb. 2, 2021 during her freshman season.
Stearns posted a combined 4-0 mark in singles and doubles this past weekend while leading the No. 6 Longhorns to a pair of road victories at West Virginia (7-0) on Friday and at No. 20 Iowa State (6-1) on Sunday. During Friday's sweep at West Virginia, she paired with freshman Allura Zamarripa at No. 2 doubles and earned a 6-2 win over Momoko Nagato and Kendall Kovick. Stearns then rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory on court 1 in singles against Kovick.
In Sunday's impressive win at No. 20 Iowa State, she again paired with Allura Zamarripa at No. 2 doubles and claimed a 6-2 victory over the No. 55-ranked duo of Sofia Cabezas and Miska Kadleckova. Stearns also added a 6-2, 6-4 win on court 1 in singles against No. 67 Thasaporn Naklo.
Stearns is No. 7 nationally in the latest ITA singles rankings and sports a 15-1 overall record in singles, including a 12-1 mark in dual-match play. She also has a perfect 5-0 record in dual-match doubles action when paired with Allura Zamarripa.
No. 6 Texas returns to action when it travels to face No. 9 Oklahoma State on Friday, March 25. First serve is set for 5 p.m. Central in Stillwater, Okla.
