No. 21/21 Men's Basketball falls 70-63 in overtime at No. 6/7 Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Senior Courtney Ramey registered a team-high 18 points, but No. 21/21 Texas (21-10, 10-8 Big 12) dropped a hard-fought 70-63 decision in overtime to No. 6/7 Kansas (25-6, 14-4 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse. The Longhorns were attempting to become the first team to defeat the Jayhawks on Senior Day at Allen Fieldhouse since the 1983-84 season.
Texas held the Jayhawks, who entered the game averaging 78.9 points per game on 48.6-percent field goal shooting, to 57 points in regulation. The Longhorns limited Kansas to 31-percent field goal shooting (18-58) on the afternoon.
Ramey converted 6-of-13 field goals, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, and 3-of-4 free throws to go along with a season-high-tying seven rebounds in a season-best 40 minutes. In addition, Ramey had primary defensive responsibility on Kansas' leading scorer Ochai Agbaji, who entered the game averaging 20.2 points per game. Ramey limited Agbaji to eight points on 1-of-11 field goal shooting, including a 0-of-5 mark from three-point range, while forcing three turnovers.
Senior Andrew Jones also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points and added six rebounds in 37 minutes. Junior Dylan Disu provided a spark off the bench with seven points, five rebounds and one block in 12 minutes of action.
Kansas grabbed an early 9-5 advantage following a David McCormack layup at the 16:00 mark. The Longhorns responded with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 15-9 lead after a Ramey jumper with 11:55 mark.
Texas held a 23-19 cushion following a Christian Bishop dunk at the 7:11 mark. The Jayhawks scored five straight points to grab a 24-23 advantage after a Jalen Wilson layup with 5:23 remaining.
A pair of Jones free throws gave the Longhorns a 31-28 lead at the 2:24 mark, but Kansas used a 7-0 spurt in a 70-second span to take a 35-31 advantage following a Christian Braun three-pointer with 1:08 left. A Ramey jumper with two seconds left cut the margin to 35-33 at the break.
A back-and-forth second half featured 10 lead changes and seven ties and neither team led by more than six points. Texas grabbed a 45-43 advantage on a pair of Timmy Allen free throws at the 13:12 mark. Tied at 47-47 following a Jones layup with 10:41 left, the Jayhawks used an 8-2 spurt over the next five-plus minutes to build a 55-49 cushion after a pair of Braun free throws at the 5:19 mark.
The Longhorns answered with back-to-back threes from Marcus Carr and Jones and took a 56-55 lead following a Jones free throw with 3:30 left. McCormack hit a pair of free throws to give the Jayhawks a 57-56 advantage at the 3:10 mark, and Ramey hit one-of-two free throws with 51 seconds remaining to tie the score at 57-57. Neither team was able to score in the final 50 seconds of regulation, and the contest went into overtime.
Texas took a 61-59 lead after a Disu jumper at the 3:06 mark, but Kansas scored six straight points to build a 65-61 cushion following a pair of Wilson free throws with 1:02 left. Allen converted a pair of free throws to cut the margin to 65-63 with 51 seconds remaining, but the Jayhawks sealed the game by scoring the final five points of the contest.
Texas begins postseason play when it travels to Kansas City for the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. The Longhorns are the No. 4 seed in the tournament and will face fifth-seed TCU in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 10. Tip is set for 11:30 a.m. Central at T-Mobile Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
