AUSTIN, Texas — Alex Anamekwe has signed an Athletic Scholarship Agreement to play basketball next season at The University of Texas, head coach Chris Beard announced Monday. Anamekwe will join Rowan Brumbaugh, Dillon Mitchell and Arterio Morris in the Longhorns' freshman class for the upcoming 2022-23 season.
UT's four-man class is currently ranked No. 6 nationally by Rivals and No. 7 by ESPN.
Anamekwe (6-6, 205), a forward from McKinney, Texas, who played at McKinney High School under coach Wes Watson, is ranked as the No. 15 prospect in the state of Texas by 247 Sports Composite. In his senior season, he paced McKinney to a 35-6 overall record and a run to the Class 6A state championship game.
Anamekwe averaged 10.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, 1.6 steals and 1.4 assists per game during his senior year. He had a steal and dunk in the final seconds to lead McKinney to a 68-66 double-overtime victory against Austin Westlake High School in the Class 6A state semifinals (March 11). Anamekwe also recorded the game-winning basket in the Class 6A regional quarterfinals to help McKinney to a 54-52 upset of top-ranked Richardson.
"I have watched Alex from his freshman year to the present day. Alex brings an amazing amount of natural ability to the court and is a prospect who will get better under Chris Beard," said Blue Zertuche, recruiting analyst for TexasHoops.com. "Alex developed the foundation he needed from his high school coach, Wes Watson at McKinney, and he has proven that he is coachable and willing to do all the little things to get better and transform his overall game."
"He has the instincts that you want in a pure athlete at the Big 12 level to make plays on and off the ball," Zertuche continued. "With his length and athleticism, Alex makes winning plays."
Anamekwe averaged nine points, seven boards, three blocks and two steals per game in his junior season. A four-year starter at McKinney High School, he was the District 5-6A Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore and junior and the District 5-6A Freshman of the Year in his initial season.
