Men's Basketball announces 2022-23 non-conference schedule

The Longhorns will play eight non-conference home contests in the first season of Moody Center and an additional regular-season game in Gregory Gym.
AUSTIN, Texas — Home games against Gonzaga and Creighton along with neutral-site contests against Illinois as part of the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden and the Pac-12 Coast-to-Coast Challenge in Dallas' American Airlines Center highlight the 2022-23 University of Texas men's basketball non-conference schedule released Thursday. The Longhorns will also pay tribute to both the late Leon Black and former player Jimmy Blacklock with a pair of special events during the season.
Texas is slated to play eight non-conference home regular-season contests in the first year of Moody Center. In addition, the Longhorns will host UTRGV on Saturday, Nov. 26 in a regular-season game in Gregory Gymnasium on the UT campus, marking the second-straight season that the Longhorns will play in the historic venue. The UTRGV game in Gregory will not be included in the 2022-23 season-ticket package.
The Big 12 Conference schedule has not been finalized at this time. Tipoff times and the complete television schedule for the 2022-23 season will be announced when available.
The Longhorns open the regular season by hosting UTEP in the first basketball game to be played in Moody Center on Monday, Nov. 7. Texas will follow with home games against Houston Baptist (Nov. 10) and Gonzaga (Nov. 16).
UT will participate the following week in the multi-team Leon Black Classic, honoring the late Texas men's basketball player who also served as head coach of the Longhorns for nine seasons from 1967-76. Black passed away at the age of 89 last year.
Texas will open the Leon Black Classic with a neutral-site contest against Northern Arizona on Monday, Nov. 21 at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas. The arena serves as the home for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA G League. This will mark UT's first regular-season contest to be played in the Rio Grande Valley in program history.
The Longhorns conclude the Leon Black Classic with a matchup against UTRGV in historic Gregory Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 26. Last year, UT played its first regular-season game in Gregory since the 1976-77 season and claimed a 73-57 victory over Sam Houston.
Texas will host Creighton as part of the Big 12-BIG EAST Battle on Thursday, Dec. 1 in Moody Center. The Longhorns will then head to Madison Square Garden to face Illinois in the Jimmy V Classic on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
Texas returns to Austin to host the Jimmy Blacklock Classic on Saturday, Dec. 10. UT will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the event, which will pay tribute to Blacklock, the first African-American starter in program history who went on to a legendary career as both a player and coach with the Harlem Globetrotters.
Texas will host Rice on Monday, Dec. 12 before heading to Dallas to participate in the Pac-12 Coast-to-Coast Challenge at American Airlines Center on Sunday, Dec. 18. The matchups for the Challenge have not been announced. The Longhorns will host Louisiana on Wednesday, Dec. 21 and Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday, Dec. 27 before opening Big 12 Conference action on Saturday, Dec. 31.
UT will step out of league play on Saturday, Jan. 28 for a road game against Tennessee as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. The Tennessee game will mark the second-straight year that the Longhorns and Volunteers have met in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, as Texas earned a 52-51 win in Austin last season.
