The Riverside, Calif., native opened her career with a brace (two goals) and an assist against Lipscomb
AUSTIN, Texas – A standout collegiate debut paid dividends for Texas soccer's Liz Worden as the Riverside, Calif., native was voted as the Big 12 Conference's Freshman of the Week according to a Tuesday release from the league office.
For Worden, this marked her first career weekly league award, while the Texas soccer program now owns 36 all-time Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week honors dating back to 2000.
Worden managed quite the collegiate debut last Thursday night, during a 5-0 victory over defending Atlantic Sun Conference champion Lipscomb, by scoring her first two career goals and dishing an assist for five total points. She scored on each of her two shots on goal of the night and managed all her damage over just 59 minutes of playing time.
The rookie forward got on the board for the first time in her Longhorns career at the 26:56 mark by fighting through two Bisons defenders on the goal line to tap in a Cameron Brooks header to make it 2-0. During the 52nd minute, Worden helped expand the UT advantage to 3-0 by delivering a perfectly weighted pass up-field into the path of an on-the-run Jilly Shimkin for an assist as her teammate eventually scored from 18 yards out. Worden later finalized the 5-0 score line by blasting home her second goal of the match (and 1,000th all-time in Texas soccer program history) off a cross from seven yards out at 72:22.
Worden and the Longhorns return to action with a pair of high-profile matches this weekend as No. 10 North Carolina, Florida and Baylor all venture to Mike A. Myers Stadium. During the four-contest event, UT will face the nationally-ranked Tarheels on Thurs., Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. before battling the Gators on Sun., Aug. 28, at 3 p.m. CT. Admission is free and all matches will be broadcast live on Longhorn Network.
