The Longhorns close the game on a 12-1 run over the final six minutes.
STILLWATER, Okla. — Graduate guard Marcus Carr recorded a team-high 12 points to pace No. 6/6 Texas (13-2, 2-1 Big 12) to a 56-46 victory at Oklahoma State (9-6, 1-2 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Longhorns closed the game with a 12-1 run over the final six minutes to improve to 2-0 in true road contests this season.
Super senior Timmy Allen registered 11 points (5-6 FT) and three steals in 30 minutes, while freshman Dillon Mitchell tied his career high with 12 rebounds to go along with three steals in 30 minutes. Graduate Brock Cunningham converted a pair of three-pointers in the final 10 minutes while posting eight points (2-2 threes, 2-2 FT) and four rebounds (three offensive) in 14 minutes.
Texas limited the Cowboys to 46 points on 30.4-percent (14-46) field goal shooting, including a 28.6-percent (6-21) mark from three-point range, on the afternoon. UT allowed eight assists while forcing 18 turnovers. The Longhorns went 17-of-21 (.810) from the free throw line, while Oklahoma State hit just 12-of-21 (.571) from the stripe.
After a Kalib Boone put-back tied the game at 5-5 with 15:58 remaining, the Longhorns used an 8-2 spurt over the next three-plus minutes to build a 13-7 advantage following a Sir'Jabari Rice layup at the 12:31 mark.
Texas extended its cushion to 22-14 after a Dylan Disu layup with 7:54 left, before a four-point play from John-Michael Wright trimmed the deficit to 22-18 at the 7:36 mark. The Longhorns held the Cowboys without a field goal for the final 7:36 of the first half and took a 32-24 lead into the break.
Texas limited the Cowboys to 33.3-percent (7-21) field goal shooting and forced 11 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. The Longhorns converted a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line in the first half.
An Allen jumper to start the second half gave the Longhorns their biggest lead of the game (34-24) with 19:47 remaining. After a Carr three-pointer pushed UT's lead to 40-33 at the 12:51 mark, the Cowboys responded with an 11-4 spurt over the next four-and-a-half minutes to take a 44-43 advantage following a Caleb Asberry three-pointer with 8:20 remaining. That would mark the final Oklahoma State made field goal of the contest.
After a Woody Newton free throw gave the Cowboys a 45-44 cushion at the 6:24 mark, the Longhorns' defense tightened and Texas closed the contest on a 12-1 run to pull away for the 56-46 victory. Cunningham's three-pointer with 2:05 remaining gave the Longhorns a 53-46 cushion and proved to be the decisive blow.
Texas is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 11 when it hosts No. 17/17 TCU. Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
