Abmas named Big 12 Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week

IRVING, Texas — University of Texas graduate guard Max Abmas has been named the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This marks Abmas' first career weekly league honor.
During Saturday's 96-85 victory over LSU in Houston, Abmas registered a team-high 20 points to go along with a game-high seven assists and six rebounds in 35 minutes. He converted 6-of-13 field goals, including 4-of-9 from three-point range, and 4-of-4 free throws. Abmas set his season high in rebounds and tied his season best in assists.
Through the first 10 games, Abmas leads the team in scoring (17.8 ppg) and minutes (33.7 mpg) and is tied for the team lead in assists (42) while sporting a 2.1 assist-to-turnover ratio (42-20). He has converted 47.1-percent (66-140) from the floor, including a 41.1-percent mark (30-73) from three-point range, and 94.1-percent (16-17) from the free throw line. Abmas has topped the 20-point mark four times in UT's first 10 contests and has now reached the 20-point plateau 71 times in his career (133 games).
Abmas moved into the No. 23 spot on the NCAA Division I all-time career scoring list with 2,740 points. He surpassed Hank Gathers of USC/Loyola Marymount (2,273) during Saturday's win. Abmas also moved into a tie for seventh place on the NCAA Division I all-time career three-point field goals made list with 450 (tied Chicago State's David Holston on Saturday).
No. 19/22 Texas (8-2) returns to action when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday, Dec. 22. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the contest will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network.
