Texas recorded a ninth consecutive sweep of the league’s awards.
IRVING, Texas – Men's Swimming and Diving swept the 2022-23 Big 12 Conference awards, the conference announced on Thursday. The Longhorns recorded a sweep of the awards for the ninth consecutive year and 17th time in program history. The awards are voted on by the league's head coaches. Sophomore Luke Hobson captured Swimmer of the Year accolades, junior Noah Duperre was tabbed the Diver of the Year and freshman Nick Harris earned Newcomer of the Year honors. Eddie Reese Was tabbed the Big 12 Swimming Coach of the Year and Matt Scoggin received Diving Coach of the Year recognition.
Hobson won three national titles at the NCAA Championship meet, winning the 200 free and 500 free and swimming the opening leg for Texas' American record 800 free relay. The Reno, Texas native established program and Big 12 records in the 500 free with a time of 4:07.37, the sixth-fastest 500 free all time. His time also makes him the fifth-fastest performer in the event. He opened Texas' 800 free relay with a 200 free time of 1:29.63, the fourth-fastest time ever in the event, while also placing him as the fourth-fastest performer in event history. Texas finished with an American, U.S. Open, meet, pool, program and Big 12 record time of 6:03.42. Hobson helped Texas to a third-place finish at the NCAA National Championships with six All-American performances (200 free, 500 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay, 800 free relay (AR), 400 medley relay) at the national meet. He also swam the second leg of Texas' fifth-place swim in the 400 free relay the anchor legs of the 200 free relay (7th) and 400 medley relay (8th).
Duperre earned All-American honors on 3-meter and Honorable Mention All-American honors on platform and 1-meter to help Texas place third at the NCAA National Championships. Duperre finished eighth in the 3-meter national championship final, took fourth in the platform consolation final to place 12th overall and placed fifth in the 1-meter consolation final, taking 13th overall. A native of New Albany, Ohio, Duperre was named the Big 12 Championship Diver of the Meet after claiming the conference crown on platform, the first Big 12 title of his career, and winning silver on both the 1-meter and 3-meter. He also earned Big 12 Diver of the Week accolades on Oct. 12 after winning on 3-meter and placing second on 1-meter at the SMU Classic in Dallas.
Harris claimed All-American honors on 1-meter and Honorable Mention All-American accolades on 3-meter at the NCAA Championships. The Chester Springs, Pa. native finished seventh on 1-meter and was the runner-up in the 3-meter consolation final to place 10th overall. All told, he collected 19 points for the Longhorns at the national meet. He was named the Big 12 Championship Diving Newcomer of the Meet after winning the title on 3-meter, scoring a season-high 443.90 points for the victory, and placing fourth on 1-meter. At USA Diving Winter Nationals in December, Harris won the national title on 1-meter and earned bronze in the synchronized 3-meter.
Reese earned Big 12 Swimming Coach of the Year honors for the 18th-straight year and 21st time in his career. He guided the Longhorns to a third-place finish at the NCAA National Championships, Texas' ninth consecutive top-three finish. Now in his 45th season as head coach, Reese recorded the 36th top-three national result of his career. The Longhorns won three events at the national meet, with gold medal performances from Hobson in the 200 free and 500 free, and an American record in the 800 free relay (6:03.42). Texas also won silver in the 500 free (David Johnston) and 200 breast (Caspar Corbeau) and bronze in the 400 IM (Carson Foster). Corbeau's silver-medal swim in the 200 breast of 1:49.15 is the 15th-fastest all time and made him the ninth-fastest performer in the event. At the Big 12 Championships, Texas won all 18 swimming events to win the conference title for the 27th consecutive year. Foster established meet records in the 200 IM (1:40.42) and 400 IM (3:35.49).
Scoggin was named the Diving Coach of the Year for the 12th consecutive year and 18th time overall. Texas had three divers qualify for the national championships for a combined seven events. All three divers (Duperre, Harris, Brendan McCourt) reached championship or consolation finals in each of the seven events they competed in with Harris finishing seventh on 1-meter and Duperre eighth on 3-meter. Duperre added Honorable Mention All-American honors on 1-meter and platform, Harris on 3-meter and McCourt on 1-meter and 3-meter. Texas Diving totaled 44 points at the national meet, the third-most of any team in the competition. At the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships, Harris won on 1-meter and Duperre won on 3-meter. Texas Diving won two of three events at the Big 12 Championships, with Duperre claiming the platform title and Harris winning on 3-meter.
