Trio from Men’s Basketball on Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Award Teams

Carr is first UT player to earn first-team All-Big 12 honors since 2015-16; Rice claims Sixth Man Award.
IRVING, Texas — Three University of Texas players earned spots on the 2022-23 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Men's Basketball Award teams, the league office announced Sunday afternoon. The official All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league's head coaches, and the coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Graduate guard Marcus Carr claimed All-Big 12 First Team honors, becoming the first UT player to receive first-team All-Big 12 accolades since Isaiah Taylor in 2015-16. Graduate guard Sir'Jabari Rice earned the league's Sixth Man Award, joining Kai Jones (2020-21) as the lone Texas players to claim the honor. Rice also was named to the All-Big 12 Third Team and the five-person Big 12 All-Newcomer Team. Super senior forward Timmy Allen was selected Honorable Mention All-Big 12.
Carr has played and started all 31 games this season and leads the team in scoring (16.2 ppg), assists (129), steals (51) and minutes (33.2 mpg). He has converted 43.7-percent (172-394) from the floor, including a 36.5-percent mark (70-192) from three-point range, and 78.8-percent (89-113) from the free throw line this year. A two-time selection as Big 12 Player of the Week this season (Dec. 19 and Jan. 2), Carr has registered an impressive 2.74 assist-to-turnover ratio (129 assists, 47 turnovers) and has reached double figures in scoring 27 times. He has topped the 20-point mark six times in Big 12 play (18 games) and eight times this season and has recorded at least 27 points in a game four times this year. Over his last seven contests, Carr has posted 34 assists against just five turnovers.
Rice, who was tabbed the National Sixth Man of the Year by College Hoops Today (Jon Rothstein) earlier on Sunday, has played in all 31 games this season. He ranks second on the team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and fourth in assists (63) and minutes (24.2 mpg) and tied for fourth in rebounding (3.5 rpg). He has converted 46.9-percent (123-262) from the floor, including a 38.2-percent mark (50-131) from three-point range, and 87.0-percent (94-108) from the free throw line this year. A two-time selection as Big 12 Newcomer of the Week this season (Jan. 16 and Feb. 6), Rice has reached double figures in scoring 20 times and topped the 20-point mark five times, all coming in the last 11 contests of the regular season.
Allen has played and started all 31 games this season. He leads the team in rebounding (5.5 rpg) and ranks second in assists (109), tied for second in steals (28), third in blocks (15) and minutes (28.0 mpg) and tied for third in scoring (10.5 ppg). Allen has reached double figures in scoring 18 times this year.
No. 9/7 Texas (23-8, 12-6 Big 12) is the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship. The Longhorns will open play in a quarterfinal-round contest against either No. 7 seed Oklahoma State or No. 10 seed Oklahoma on Thursday, March 9 at 6 p.m. Central. UT earned its best seed at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship since the Longhorns were a No. 2 seed in the 2011 tourney.
Texas' quarterfinal game will be televised nationally by either ESPN or ESPN2. Oklahoma State and Oklahoma will meet in a first-round contest on Wednesday, March 8 at 8:30 p.m. Central. All games at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship will be played at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.
