Rodney Terry becomes first coach in Texas program history to earn the prestigious award.
AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas Men's Basketball Interim Head Coach Rodney Terry has been named Sporting News Men's College Basketball National Coach of the Year, the publication announced Wednesday morning. Terry is the first coach in Texas Basketball program history to earn the prestigious honor.
The annual award is presented to the best men's college basketball head coach in NCAA Division I competition. The honor was first given in 1964 following the 1963-64 season and is presented by Sporting News, a United States-based sports magazine that was established in 1886.
Terry was named Acting Head Coach at The University of Texas a few hours prior to the Dec. 12 home game against Rice. He was named Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season on Jan. 5. Since taking over on Dec. 12, Terry has guided the Longhorns to a 16-7 mark, including five wins against AP Top 25 opponents. Texas is 7-1 under Terry in games decided by five points or less OR in overtime.
The Longhorns have a 23-8 overall record (12-6 Big 12, second) entering this week's Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. Texas is 11-8 in Quad 1 games this season, and the 11 Quad 1 wins are tied for the second-most nationally. Through games of March 6, UT is one of four schools to rank in the Top 20 in KenPom in both adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency. The Longhorns (16 offense, 20 defense) are joined by Houston (5/5), Alabama (20/3) and UConn (10/12).
UT earned a No. 2 seed in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship, marking the highest seed for the Longhorns at the league's postseason tourney since 2011 (also a 2 seed). The 23 regular-season victories mark the most regular-season wins by Texas since the 2010-11 season (25-6). Since the Big 12 moved to an 18-game round-robin schedule starting in the 2011-12 season, Texas reached the 12-win mark for the first time in league play (12-6 record).
Texas is 5-3 against AP Top 11 opponents this year with wins over No. 2 Gonzaga, No. 3 Kansas, No. 7 Creighton, No. 11 Baylor and at No. 7 K-State. UT is 7-6 this season against AP Top 25 foes. The seven wins against AP-ranked teams are tied for the second-most in program history. Texas went 8-5 against AP Top 25 teams in 2003-04, 7-4 in 2005-06 and 7-6 in 2020-21.
The Longhorns are ranked No. 7 in the latest AP poll (March 6). Texas has now been ranked in the top 10 of The AP poll for 16 consecutive weeks. This marks the longest such stretch since Texas was in the top 10 for all 19 polls during the 2002-03 Final Four season.
