Men’s Basketball to face Marquette in 2023 BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle

IRVING, Texas — The Big 12 and BIG EAST Conferences announced the dates and matchups for the 2023 BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle on Thursday. Texas will travel to face Marquette on Tuesday, Dec. 5 in Milwaukee, Wis. The matchups for the fifth year of the men's basketball scheduling alliance were jointly determined by the two leagues and all games will be played from November 30-December 5.

The home school has the right to determine the venue of its game. Broadcast arrangements for the games will be determined by the national television rights holder of the home team, which is ESPN for the Big 12 and FOX Sports for the BIG EAST. Game times and television networks will be announced when available.

With each conference adding member schools since the start of the original agreement, the Battle will increase from 10 to 11 matchups for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. The Big 12 will host six games in 2023-24, while the BIG EAST will host six the following season.

Marquette holds a 1-0 lead in the all-time series against the Longhorns. In the only previous meeting between the two schools, the then-No. 5 ranked Golden Eagles registered a 65-56 victory in the championship game of the Milwaukee Classic (Milwaukee, Wis.) on Dec. 27, 1977. That 1977-78 Longhorns squad went on to post a 26-5 overall record and win the NIT Championship under coach Abe Lemons.

The Longhorns completed the 2022-23 season with an overall record of 29-9 (12-6 Big 12), won the Phillips 66 Big 12 postseason tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight for the first time since 2008. The 29 wins marked the third-most victories in a season in program history. Texas also set a school single-season record for most wins against AP-ranked teams (10-7 mark).

The Longhorns were ranked No. 5 in the final Associated Press poll, marking a tie for the highest ranking in the final AP poll in program history. Texas also was No. 5 in the final AP poll during the 2002-03 Final Four season. UT earned a No. 2 seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, marking the highest seed for the Longhorns in the NCAA tourney since 2008 (also a No. 2 seed).

Texas was also one of just three schools to rank in the Top 15 in the final 2022-23 KenPom rankings in both adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency. The Longhorns (15 offense, 13 defense) were joined by UConn (3 offense, 7 defense) and Houston (11 offense, 5 defense).
